Hi Bob... How many miles on your car when it started?? and would you not think putting a new one on would solve it.. or at least change the noise?... chain has been suggested before.. not saying its wrong.. but don't think anyone has solved the problem by changing the chain or even cam?...
One thing is for sure... about 75% of the 500's and some 4.6 do it!!!
confused
Dunno, John. As I said my bearing was noisy so could have been a year or the day I first heard the rattle? Car had 38k on it when I heard it. As for new one, Jon said not worth bothering with, and TBH it does not worry me overly, it rattles for a split second just before tick over.

You could always replace the chain set up with a gear drive and see if the rattle goes away.

if you can still hear it under the whine hehe

Here ya go.. this is mine... not the best recording but you can hear it in the middle section best...
You have to blip it to make it do it.. hold it at 2K and let it drop it don't appear to make the noise...

Just got the car back earlier today. The verdict is that this noise is nothing out of the ordinary, and as far as they are concerned nothing is needing attention. Had mentioned small ends and cam before, but general feel is noise can come from lifters where they are slow to move (I think it was) - these engines are pretty old design. People in the workshop are aware of the characteristic on the 500 engine. It appears some can be louder than others - the 450 can have similar characteristics, but is quieter. As we have found, seems this is not uncommon on the 500, as various people have come forward and experienced. I'm happy it runs perfectly fine. One other possible is to just have the engine rebuilt, but obviously a costly exercise for nothing if all things are general for character on the engine. That's all from my side.

The rattle in mine was driving me insane. The car went to V8Dev in June for a MS2 installation, which ended up being a complete engine rebuild (not because of the rattle). I'm picking her up next Monday. If by some chance it still has the same rattle when settling back to tickover I may lose the will to live.

Yeah, it will be interesting to hear if anything changes (no 'rattle noise' listening pun intended)

Hi John, we got a bit carried away I'm afraid, basic build spec as follows:

V8Dev 5.0 short motor
H beam rods and forged pistons
Bespoke V8Dev cam
500 heads with new bulleted guides and additional fettling
Manifold ported and matched to heads and trumpet base
ACT triple throttle carbon fibre plenum and carbon fibre superflare 45mm trumpets
Ford racing high flow injectors
pre-cats removed
Megasquirt fuel & ignition (fully mappable)

So no dizzy or AFM smile Off on a camping/running in hoon after picking her up, taking in the Lake District and various other interesting places, aiming for a 1000 miles in around a week or just under... I'll post my first impressions early next week hopefully biggrin

Guess it cannot do any harm to try it, though!?
Havent given my fella much air at all this year (total lack of dry weather up here plus domestic issues) but noise remains when I do have the odd drive in it!
