I bet I can guess who said 'slipped liner'.. a Coventry company may be....
I tend to think it's slight piston slap / small ends....
nothing to worry about as at least 75% of the 500's do it... some from new... others can start afer as little as 15K miles... some at 75K still don't?
If you hear some other engines they can also sond like this.. the Ducati I once had was similar... but was fine... and ever listerned to a speed 6 unit...
No.. it will be fine.. get it sold!! smile

Mmmmmm.. no idea in that neck of the woods.... I was suggested to me by 'you know who'... and I thought it a strange call?....
Does this 'other' places / person have evidance of this... and have they cured it by replacing the liners?

No hard evidence, but a best guess. Also said it could be cam, followers, timing chain etc but no way of telling till they dive into the engine which is where the costs start, minimum 2k for a look around!!!

Cheers

bit of a thread bump here smile. My Griff is a 96 500 and has recently started making a really nasty rattle around the 1500 - 2000 rpm range. (mostly when backing off the throttle). Car still pulls very strongly with no other symptoms.
Did anyone get to the bottom of this noise?

Yes tvrbeaver did. Its little ends. He put in new pistons n pins and all is well.

Tvr got to 5 litre by using a 90mm throw crank but then used an off the shelf piston from the 4.2 engine. Using this piston meant they had to make their own conrod which ultimately was too short and therefore has too much movement. It is thought that this excess movement of the rod is what brings on this little end wear. They perhaps would have been better using a much shorter piston and therefore longer rod of better dimensions. I suppose the way they did it using an off the shelf piston was the cheapest way.

Now why some do it and some dont is anyones guess.

Bugger that means I'll need to pull the engine out!! Only because I have other jobs that could have waited but now there is enough going on that it justifies the expense and time frown.
Thanks for the reply maybe a winter project to rebuild my engine....
