With pranks that seem to have been carried on at the Factory during the build process, its a miracle no ones found a bundle of Gelly sticks and an alarm clock tucked up behind a panel ! A Tracker box by any chance ?

Ah, yes could be a tracker, would perhaps explain the battery. Looks just a bit amateurish, the battery seems to have been wrapped in insulation tape. It has two wires disappearing into the door lock area, perhaps to pick up a supply and two wires disappearing through a hole roughly above the diff could be the aerial I suppose. No markings or numbers on the box, suppose if it is a tracker it would need to be a bit discrete. Weighs a ton ( well half a kg) so it is coming out whatever it is.

That's where the M23t alarm box is on mine, which is the volumetric protection bit...I guess an aftermarket version of the same bit?

Alarm sensor is still there so not that. Can't cut the blue wire first because they are all black.

Has it got a live feed? If not, cut it out, perhaps!

Looks very similar to this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTOROLA-AUTOMOTIVE-CAR-...If you disconnect the car battery, then disconnect the units battery (I very much doubt it's holding any charge after all these years anyway) you can cut the wires at different lengths, and insulate each one indvidually. You could trace all the wiring back to source, but that could take you a while!! I would have thought it just has a +ve, GND and (maybe) IGN wire + an antenna cable (coax?) maybe?

There's a couple of seperate boxes for the alarm...the imobiliser, the alarm and the micorwave part that stops people leaning into an open convertible and nicking stuff. If all the wires are black, that indicates someone didn't want the wires to be easily identifyable (security wiring as on my alarm) and therefore to me would suggest an alarm type part.. The only sure way is to trace the wires as best as you can and see where they go...

Hi Virgil, I did post some advice above (and a link for verification). I would be very surprised if it wasn't a tracker, you should be able to remove following the steps I advised.

I think it was an early attempt at directional stabiliy to try to stop the car piroueting on it's self in slow tight corners. Remove at your peril

I was told to set it so that it goes off about 2 feet above the gearstick. From memory the adjustment is clockwise more sensitive, anticlockwise less sensitve. FFG

Your theory could indeed be correct Ben it is certainly heavy enough to add some grip purely by being there. I did spin the car several times before removing it however so perhaps it wasn’t working correctly. I guess there must have been a similar device fitted to the Datsun which you also removed.
