Hi,

Can anyone please tell me either the source, (Sierra cosworth?) or the part number for a CV joint on a 4.3 Precat.

Thanks SteveD

Or google Dave Mac Propshafts ... very good, quick, cheap and knew exactly what I needed.

I'll second dave mac propshafts.
Decent CV joint and a perfect match.

Sells lots to TVR owners so knows exactly what is needed.

Did you source a CV Joint Gnasher and if so do you have any reference numbers from it or know what its off?

Oh, for future ref - which I'll update if I can find which vehicle the CV Joint is off
The CV joint on my 4.3 is 28 splines and 108mm diameter

Sorry, After asking for advice I should have let people know what I did.

I spoke to Dave Mac & he was waiting for stock, he did quote a price a lot lower than the TVR specialists, but no good if he hasn't got any!

Prolinx were very good, they stock genuine GKN joints @ £55.95 + VAT each, and said that their high angle Lobro boot holders & boots were really too good (and expensive) for road use. I got the joints ( I decided that to replace just 1 joint on a shaft was probably a false economy) from them the next day.

TVR Power do a cv boot kit, which has the boot, grease & clips for £10 + VAT each, so I got those from them.

Doing it that way worked out cheaper than buying the lot from a specialist, but better, I thought than going with £25 specials off Ebay.

Changing the joints was fairly straightforward, my car has larger cap headed bolts fitted, & they came off ok, getting the shaft out from between the wishbones was a fiddle, I ended up marking the position of the top wishbone & then removing the bolt & that gave me enough room.

The circlips came off ok, but I was a bit surprised how tight the old joints were on the splines, considerable force required! Refitting was as they say the reverse, again the new joints were a tight fit onto the splines.

Anyway all done I took the car out, and was presently surprised that driveline shunting was no more, the joint must have been worse than I thought.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Thanks for the update Steve - because I'm fighting with a CV which won't separate from the drive shaft so at least I know now its just stiff and I'll have to give it a bit of welly.

I've just picked up my CV joints so have some details for future reference.

They came from Unipart Automotive Newark (Tel 01636 672501)
Any Unipart store will be able to supply these but they won't post, you have to collect.

They are from a 1991 Ford Sierra 2.0
CV Outer diameter 108mm
28 splines

Part number AMKTDL3018R CV Joint - Inner
(they are supplied by AMK of Wakefield and the box part number is TDL3018R)
In the box is the CV, CV circlip, a new boot, CV cover plate, boot clips (large and small), a sachet of grease.
The price for 2 of these was £89.98 including VAT

Ian, when i did mine i only managed to remove 1 of the 4 joints off the driveshafts. The one that did eventually move took about an hour of hitting it into next week. The others just refused to budge.

I had to take them to a garage and got them to press them off. They even commented that they took a bit of budging even with the press. I got new driveshafts in the end and the new joints went on just perfect.

Sounds like I had it easy then biggrin

Though I doubt my neighbour and friend Julian thinks so.
It took us half an hour with a cold chisel and 4lb hammer to get one of the joints off the drive shaft.
The other took us just 10 mins with the same 'technique' hehe

There are wear and grooved marks one the loosest of the CV - where the bearings have rubbed against the inner part that attaches to the drive shaft. So I'm hopeful we've found the problem.
If I'm lucky I'll get time this weekend to refit things and see if I guessed right.
