I bought My rosso pearl Griff 500 when it was 4 months old and with 4000 miles (from a wealthy banker who bought it new as an "ornanent"). It has been part of family life for 15 years now and as such the kids have grown up with it and dont want it to go and neither do I. The problem is I only did 200 miles in it last year because and have had no opportunity to use it. Its still like new (yes realy is like new) and has covered just 22000 miles.

As I said, I just dont use it now. I cant take it to work because as it may get vandalised... I worry about spoiling it for general running about usage.
I am thinking about buying a C63 AMG Mercedes (+ performance pack)that can be used daily and left anywhere and selling the Griffith.

What do you think Griffith is worth and will I regret the move. Has anyone switched over or can offer me an insight to owning the Mercedes ?

Thanks in advance for your comments

Coincidence , but a pal has one . And its for sale !

We were in convoy (. The Merc , other pals Range Rover and my Griff ) on the 25 last Thursday week to mate Simons funeral at Upminster .
We pulled up together at the Thurrock roundabout and yes those Mercs sound awesome ! He loves it and He shouted out to me when I pointed at the Griffs low fuel gage " Ime getting 12 to the ruddy gallon " !

Will pm you .

Hi dont know how much this helps but have experience of both the clk55 & cl55and drove them back to back with the Griff and they are chalk and cheese.
The mercs are seriously refined cruisers with some serious grunt that whisk you along in the lap of luxury all be it at a serious price in terms of servicing especially if you want to maintain a main dealer sh.
Running costs in terms of fuel and tyres is also high but you get what you pay for, they also don't like to sit for long periods either with fault codes popping up like scroungers at a lottery winners home!
The Cl was so comfortable you could fall asleep while the seat massaged you behind double glazed windows smile
You obviously know all about the Griff but for me the cars are at totally different ends of the spectrum! Although i know which one i would rather spend the winter in!!!

I'm just curious...

What is it about a Mercedes that makes you think it won't get vandalised, in respect to a TVR?

I know that you have a 'plastic' window at the rear - but what are they going to be breaking into it for? Your 'state-of-the-art' Pioneer CD/Tape deck?

I've had my Grif for nearly 8 years without incident. Three weeks after delivery of a new E-Coupe Merc I come back in broad daylight in a Supermarket car park to a broken window (nothing in sight - just the expectation I guess, that something would be in there worth stealing...)

I was fixing the car on the drive the other day, and a couple of kids (about 10-12yrs old) walked past and stopped - 'Nice car - is that a TVR?' - Can't imagine that with a C63...Keep the Grif, and get a C350 diesel, then map it. Okay it won't sound as good (but the TVR still will), but it will go like stink and do 35-40mpg.

Maybe the depreciation is another factor?

Hi Everyone thanks for your input...very useful.

Smartypantts. Thanks for the Jag suggestion but not sure about them.

7 TVR. Thanks for telling about your experiences of the 55s, Iwas looking at those and they are beasts aswell.

Jeboa. In answer to your relevant comments about vandalism. I would care less about a merc being vandalised (obviously other than the money) as it is a tool for getting around, although a very nice one. The TVR holds more sentimental value to me and would deteriorate from the beautiful condition it is in very quickly, I fear. I already buzz about in a transit van but your suggestion about the diesel merc is woth looking into. Thanks

Any ideas on Value ?

Hi Steelnads,

Dont be a muppet! You have one hell of a mint Griff mate.....and I don't say that lightly (as some of you know what I'm like with my cars & esp my old griff 500 SE wink )

Despite my recent upgrade, I do really miss my old girl, & I know you will too.

....and as for the idea of a merc.....have a look at one of these instead...

borrowed from another thread - hope they don't mind but it's a cracking pic!

Priceless .... i dont use mine much due to family commitments, shift work and the like, took the lad out today on a day off and his last day off school, glorious weather, fantastic drive awesome noise ...... it would take something deperate to get rid of it no matter how little it gets used, listen to those that have sold theirs, most if not all regret it after the fact whatever the reasons they had at the time to do so .

Right !
I was borderline before but now I am keeping it.Thanks to everyone for the comments and suggestions. Life has been hectic for the last year but I reckon I should have more time to enjoy it soon. I suppose it's like a long term relationship you have to work at it. The kids and Mrs will be away at the end of the month so I have booked in the diary some special time, just the two of us.

With regards to the C63 The plan is to reduce my budget and get an older one or maybe something else with some grunt for daily use.

Reeso. Hello mate, thanks for your comments about the car and they were enough for me to decide to keep it. That Audi is tasty, I like your style.

Thanks Again and I will post up a pic of the new tool when it arrives/ I have saved up enough pennies

Hi Folks. Time for an update.

Well it is almost a year and a half since I started this thread and I have made an effort to use My Griffith more. The mileage has crept up to 23943 but this is not enough only averaging 100 miles a month or so. I have looked at quite a lot of C63 AMG over recent months and I am surprised at how "rough" most of them are, badly maintained and grubby so I have in fact leapt in head first and ordered a new C63 AMG 507 coupe .... right that's done. It will be a sad day when the Griff goes but it has to be done and so I am now going to list it for sale on Pistonheads.

It is still in the same amazing condition. What is the market like for Griffiths at the moment and what would you say the car is worth ? Any advice would be much appreciated. I will try and upload a picture for your information/enjoyment. Cheers

Shame to see the TVR go but,,,,
I drove a re-mapped C63 coupe and was impressed, proper impressed! The power is relentless and the noise is pretty cool too and absolutely understand your choice. In fact after I'd driven it I flirted with the idea of an AMG of some sort but have decided against it in favour of the old girl I have. Reasons? the main one being I would be banned in a very short time in the Merc' as it is so easy to drive and reach ridiculous speeds and the need to do so would be overwhelming whilst having one hand on the steering wheel and the other playing with stuff. But in the TVR I have to keep both hands on the steering wheel in the vague hope I'll stay on the road, arrive both thankful and scared with a sense of achievement for doing so. Also, it costs next to nothing and will be worth the same 5 years down the road. Well, that's my excuse. I'm sure you will love it. Griffith prices at the moment? Overpriced and staying put as most are very expensive and few seem to move so depends on how long you want it to be for sale I suppose. Good luck anyway.

So it's a 1999 with mileage in the mid 20ks. Sounds a bit like mine, I'll be interested to see some pics.

What makes you think you aren't going to get as precious about your brand new Merc ? Suppose you don't actually want to drive it everywhere and leave it anywhere?
