I'm looking to buy a new clutch for my 500 to inspire me this winter to get the engine out etc... The last set up I had showed the car to be around the 340 LBF mark at 4K so I needa clutch that will cope with this... My existing one is not bad as I don't think it slips and thats just a std 500 unit well bedded in.. but looking at the spec of these, they are only rated to 320 LBF ? But I also want a clutch and not a on / off switch... and not a LEFT leg workout unit I know AP do a stronger unit as Daz sent me the numbers somewhere.. but have not been able to get AP at a resonable price (whos best for AP?) And I know V8D do Helix units but I did read somewhere about problems with them (although I can't find that now).. and obviously excluding the one thats been ripped using noz So any suggestions / advice at all Cheers

Haircutmike is no longer with us Some bloke called Phazed or something similar appears to have bought HCM's car and assimilated his previous persona. Either that or he's having another mid-life crises

Hi John, Still looking like back end of this month, unlikely to be before the 20th! I still have the boggo 500 clutch, there was lots of meat on it when the engine was rebuilt last year so it stayed! I think I may be getting a bit of slip now but its nothing hugely noticeable, possibly because I dont have bags of instant massive torque at low revs... I do seem to have 'rev counter lag' tho' although that might be my imagination Very interested in the responses you're getting here, and DBV8's thread on clutches, seems a 'hot' topic at the moment! I have a rough target figure for BHP with the Rotrex fitted, but no idea what it will do to the torque figure! A new clutch is definitely on the to do list when the Rotrex is installed, and as usual I'll almost certainly take Rob's advice... Like yourself though, I don't want to have to do single leg squats just to keep the right one the same size as the left one

TBH there may be a lot on mine when I look but at 50K I think a new one just to be sure...... May go the AP route as Daz says as I think it was Pete who had problems with the Helix?.... Let me know when then and we can plan things... but needs to be this month if poss... I'm itching to get started!!...

Just looked back at the invoice for my Taraka Plus rebuild at Power as I had the clutch done at the same time. The part number on the invoice is Q0101. On their website this looks like the std 5ltr AP plate. I'm having no issues with it when hustling along...as you do... The engine was giving 306lbs at the wheels from Power's dyno. From memory I think you have similar numbers.

I did have a Helix paddle clutch which I changed after 1K miles as I couldn't stand it as it was soooo heavy, (really heavy).
It also juddered and was a bit of a switch!
I went back to a standard 5.0 clutch as t6he last one lasted about 20K miles, 30+ T/Ds and about 40 runs up the strip!

thanks for that.. all good info..... I was told the original clutch was a std Land Rover unit on the 500's... I know Power fit the AP's now... As Daz posted above the uprated AP's are available and if they are not too heavy I may get that... Keep looking.. Cheers!!

Mine does not feel any different to the standard clutch ..the 340lb clutch has green paint on the the pressure plate and cover so you know its the correct one ..don`t think you could wear it out o a 4l car . The weird thing is the plate has Borg&Beck stamped on it .

WokingWedger said: So what are you planning to do when the engine is out ? Have a look for that Bl**dy noise! ... as a minimum, replace the pistons I think... But get it all measured up... Look at cam float and check all pre-loads before it comes in bits... And then go from there.... I just know it's going to end up costing a fortune Will give you a quote once its done
