Is it still possible to have a small front number plate made or is it now illegal these days to get one made. Does anyone know of a place that can supply?

As per my reply on the TVRCC forum, they're technically illegal but mine has been on my car for 8 years, has been seen and commented on by Police and gone through several APNR systems without issue. I assume it helps to have a short number as I do.

Mine came from http://www.fancyplates.com/

IF you're ordering a rear plate as well ensure you select TVR and translucent from the drop down when ordering.

+2 for Fancyplates and I've had my small front plate on for 12 years with no problems with MOT or ANPR.

Hi, I Have a 3/4 size plate too, and like the others never had any problems. I cant remember the company but I think it came from Ireland. One think I have heard, don't quote me, but if its not for looks but for for a reason, for example extra cooling, its allowed.

Technically, if it's a non standard plate, I believe it's being sold to you as a 'show plate' and if you use it on the road you are liable to be pulled.
However it seems a rare occurrence, especially if you spec a standard font.

It's a bit much to expect your garage to mot it with an illegal plate though, so keep your standard plate and swap it over when the time comes. Of course if you keep your standard plate in the boot and are unfortunate enough to have a brush with the law, you can always plead you forgot to take your show plate off and offer to swap it over there and then. It'd be a cruel and heartless bib who nicked you in those circumstances whistle

Ouch! Who'd have thought that in this day and age there'd still be anyone prepared to do the paperwork to do you when you could sort out the issue in 30 seconds rolleyes

Mind you, our local Bobby isn't impressed with the PH smiley on my rear plate....

My car has always passed the MOT with the 3/4 plate and it's not a standard font, although as one PC observed it was a clearer font than the standard one. smile

FYI for those that want to keep it legal:

I've recently fitted a new standard plate from Halfords that I've cut down to meet the legal requirements as the standard plate is actually over sized (11mm border is required). The new standard font size has been reduced in size to accommodate the EU type symbol so if you get a plate without any symbol then you can legally cut off about 30mm from each end of the plate (this is for a stock 7 character plate). I could also cut a small amount off the top and bottom of the plate but frankly I couldn't be bothered. This is clearly not as small as a 3/4 plate but if you want to keep it legal then it gives you a bit more air in the front.

Rob

P.S. With the legal font all characters are the same width except "1" so if you have a "1" on your plate then you will be able to trim more and clearl the same applies if you have fewer characters.
