As part of my re-build I want to change the UJs in the couplings, however they are peened in.

Best price for new couplings seem to be H0072 Upper - £37.20 and H0073 Lower - £34.50, which is fairly steep considering the cost of the same for other cars and I still have to rebuild the actual steering rack.

Has anybody managed to have the knuckles machined to take new UJs?

There is not too many threads on this subject but has anybody done the hard work and got to the bottom of whether the couplings are GM, Ford, Land Rover or a combination of any of those 3 (or more)?

I did try to find the source of the steering column UJs for someone recently, but without much success. The steering column is Vauxhall and the later rack is TVR, although with the same size splines as the Rover rack they used to fit on the early Griffiths. As a consequence, the top UJ is a hybrid with Vauxhall sized splines one side and Rover sized ones the other. The bottom UJ is all Rover size. Both UJs appear to be specially made for TVR. They are probably based on stock forgings somewhere along the line, but there are no markings that indicate who the supplier is. The rods that link the UJs come in varying lengths, so all-in-all it looks like a job for a dealer.

The above is an extract from a website posted here several years ago.

There are varying length u/js and varying length splined shafts apart from different spline combinations. If I were you I would bite the bullet and stick to a dealer, it will save you a lot of time (hopefully) in the end.

I did Google that thread but wondered if anybody had made any further progress.

I do try and do things 'for the greater good' of the TVR community, so as there is nothing to lose I think will push out the old UJs as the peening is not terribly heavy and see if I can source new UJs, push them in and re-peen. It's probably not worth having the UJ housing machined to take circlips although that is an option.

If none of this works then I can always fall back on the option of buying new from my local TVR supplier.

The steering column spline is the same as on a classic range rover.
