Interested in people's thoughts here. I've had "Grizzly" my Griff 500 15 years now and have to admit that since I got the Aston I've driven it less. So to rekindle my affection for him I'm thinking of a mild makeover.

Cosmetically I will have the nose and mirrors re-sprayed to get rid of the inevitable stone chips and think I will have the 7" headlamp upgrade done at the same time. Following this I will get the car professionally detailed.

As some of you may know, I did some mild tuning back in the early 00's - the usual stuff for the time; Tornado chip, ACT plenum, Jenvey throttles, bigger AFM, Bosch injectors, solid lifers/adjustable push rods, de pre-catted etc. Mark Adams got 320bhp and 325lb ft at Austec.

I must say at this stage that the car drives perfectly, no shunting at slow speed, pulls right through the rev range up to 6000 and accelerates hard but... I have often wondered if mapped ignition and coil packs would make it even better? Would I get more power & torque or is 320/325 about it anyway? Happy to spend the money on getting it set up (I believe Joolz is doing the Emerald K6 install) but don't want to create problems in an otherwise great car.

Thoughts? scratchchin

I started at the same point (mild upgrades) & right now, wished I hadnt done anything else but drive & smile. I'm mid-major upgrade so give me a few months and I hope I will be happy again.. My advice, book a drive across Europe early 2015 & enjoy all 320 ponies - it's enough anyway !

I am running an emerald ecu on my 430 bv and ran one on my Caterham as well - very pleased - plenty of mapping examples around - great idle - very smooth power delivery highly recommend

Joolz fitted an emerald into my griff when I installed the apj, a very nice instal, engine was very smooth and easy to change the map when further upgrades were done.

Another vote for Emerald and also for Joolz! Several years ago I put a Vitesse twin plenum on my 5.0L with a Lucas ECU + Tornado chip. Despite repeated visits to Mark A, it would never idle properly and was never a happy drive. Going to an Emerald, coil packs and wide band lambda and with Joolz waving his magic wand the car is now transformed. Making quite a few more horsepowers now as well. Oooh , and the pops and bangs .... loverly!

You see mine bangs like the sound heavy artillery a few miles distant over the rolling French countryside and idles too. So do I want to change anything? more power yes but it ain't broke so noting really to fix. biggrin

Hi Rich, hope you are well.

A front end respray and the 7" headlamp upgrade both sound like a great idea. I am not so sure I would want to change the ECU if you are already happy with the way the car performs, you could end up introducing problems.

If I were looking to aftermarket my choice would be the MBE ECU from TVR Power. The three main selling points for me on the MBE solution which are...

  • MBE ECUs are used as OEM equipment by the likes of Noble, Caterham etc so there can be no question of the quality of these products in addition to being subject to tough emissions testing will they need to be type approved and produced to full ISO 9001 quality standards of traceability.
  • Standardised self-diagnostic and reporting capability via ODB2, no need to find a laptop with the bespoke software on and serial cable to connect to the ECU and diagnose faults like most other aftermarket ECUs. Pretty much every garage in Europe will have an ODB2 code reader for troubleshooting as all cars from 2001 onwards have ODB2.
  • TVR Power offer a drive in drive out service, when I looked at Emerald (albeit a couple of years ago) Emerald supply the ECU and could map the car but did not offer installation. I would not want to be in a situation where there is an issue and the mapper is blaming the installer and vice versa.

Just to add to Mathews post above, obd2 can be accessed with a Bluetooth adaptor and a app like "torque "on your smart phone to read code's and delete them, cost about a tenner for the dongle and there are free versions of the app available though paid ones do more.

Got MBE on mine and have to say wow!

Even more of a pleasure to drive, very happy with it and extremely nice installation.

For the lights I am going with the HID upgrade in the new year, as my lenses are fine and a lot cheaper option.

+1

Jools does drive in drive out install.

When I've not been able to get the Griff up to Chesterfield & had it mapped by someone else, they all admit that Jool's work is meticulous.
