Thrust plate for camshaft missing
Discussion
Seems that I'm not the only one surprised that there's no thrust plate holding the camshaft in some of these engines... After all there are threaded holes in the block for one.
Looking in a catalogue for genuine Rover parts, and also in an overhaul manual for Land Rover, there sure is a thrust plate in sections about the camshaft.
Isn't this kind of strange? OK, sometimes manufacturers (TVR not excluded) tend to reduce parts here and there to save money, but hey, the camshaft thrust plate???
Any input, anyone?

Rover never fitted them to early engines as they werent regarded as necessary as dnb explained. However if yours has the threaded holes for one why not fit one.
I know my old pre serp 4.3 engine didnt have one and it did suffer from cam walk / knock on initial start up.
Give John Eales a ring i think he sells them for about £13.

also there are two different cam retaining plates. The cam needs to be ground down for it to fit. The small (original 4.6) retainer from rimmers did not fit my V8d cam, v8d sent me a different bigger one. It might be that your original cam does not have the nose of the cam ground so that the retainer fits... If you have a Power or v8d aftermarket cam it will probably fit
That sounds reasonable, but still odd to just skip the part at TVR Power when it turned out that the vernier didn't go clear. But obviously the cam seems to stay in place anyway, so...
Well, a stealth cam with non-adjustable vernier is about to enter my engine, so chances are that a TP can be fitted without being smashed by the vernier.
It just feels better to have a TP sitting there, regardless of what use it will do. I think you know the feeling.

Thanks OleVix, as soon as I get hold of a plate I will test if it fits. My new cam is from V8 Developments.
Just want to add that my previous post was an answer to Sardonicus' post which seems to have been withdrawn. Just so that you don't see me as the slightly confused Swedish Griff owner...
And thanks rev-erend for looking.

Hi Steffo.
OK - found the part. Still in its original packaging.
Part number is ERR5926 - thrust plate and 2 bolts.
This is what it looks like (from the net)
Price on the net seems to vary between £15~25 plus UK VAT.
As its PH - £10 plus whatevery the postage is to your country, if you think its the correct part.

Thanks rev-erend, I can gladly buy your plate as soon as I've found out if it's the correct one. First I thought that the "half-type" from Rimmer Bros was the one to have, cheap (£7.02) and simple. But apparantly I will have to check with V8 Dev, the supplier of my cam, first. I'll get back to you.
