a common problem i believe - what are the top 3 fixes?

particularly noticeable with top up and windows cracked - blocking rear hood vents no affect

Mate had same problem , he changed the boot rubber as the fumes were being sucked into the boot space and choking the cabin :-)

Some of the early pre cats had exhaust extenders because of this. They look a bit odd though IMHO
They do run rich and my Griff be a bit stinky and make your eyes water at traffic lights.

Generally, the boot seal is the first thing to try though as Stesrg says

Hoover.

I had the same. A big improvement when I adjusted the boot to close tighter onto the seal

I had exactly the same problem with mine, traced it to a void that was open between the cabin and boot over the rear wheel arch area (access through the panel where the seat belt is located) so the fumes were drawn into the cabin, simply inserted sponge to fill the gap, problem solved. regards Dave

There is a very clever fix by sealing the 2 holes in the boot floor and adding a couple of aluminium deflectors under the car. I did it a couple of years ago and it works. Try the search as I can't remember exactly what it did.

I didn't think that pre cats have the holes in the boot floor, mine doesn't, so the fix isn't applicable. I replaced the boot seal which didn't work and ended up taking off the boot lid, sorting the hinges and re fixed the boot lid a number of times using vaseline on the seal to get a good contact all round resulting in a useable boot and a cabin that doesn't smell of burnt fuel.

The strange eye watering smell turned out to be burning fibre glass where the offside manifold heat had burnt through the insulation.

Hmmm, since my rear (seatbelt anchor) qrt panel carpet sections discoloured grey from tan and rotted, I am assuming that filling void between boot and these areas may well be the cure- that and re-fitting a plastic membrane behind the carpet panels.
I shall also look into sourcing a better replacement or supplementary balloon type boot seal (inflated cycle innertube would prob work well- or a foam rubber that would not retain water, fitted in gap around seal?

I am assuming that the problem of opening windows a crack with hood up, must be due to lowering cabin pressure with passing airflow and thus pulling in fumes through rear qrt carpet pieces?

Anyone know where i can get just those rear qrt carpet pieces? - Also looking for inexpensive leather repairer to repair small area of car seat base
