I'd check your getting power to the solenoid first. Can you here it making a noise? If not there not to hard to replace.

If it doesn't catch when you close the lid I think you also need to check the mechanism is not jammed/seized. You should be able to manually close and release the catch from inside the boot (don't get in and close the boot wink ).

If you pull on the cable it should lock and then on the catch there is a lever which should release it when pressed. It's easy enough to unbolt the catch from the boot and disconnect the cable if you need to clean it up or fiddle around to make sure it is operating

If that is working then it may just be alignment but you need to make sure the electronic release is working before you start doing that or you may end up with the boot closed and no way to unlock it.

Thanks for the tips so far.
i'll work on it over the weekend.

I do think that it is electrical, nothing happens when I press the boot release on the dash, no noise or indication of the mechanism working.

I also have no dashboard light in the instruments for some reason.
The instruments were out also but this was just the 10 amp fuse, which I replaced, all the clocks started working then, but no lights in them.

I cant find any fuse for the boot release.

If I try to push the boot catch mechanism manually, its like its locked, it wont move

any further suggestions welcomed

Your dash lights could be the switch under the dash by your left knee - have you checked it?

The boot catch can be tested with a screwdriver into the catch and press down. Does it click locked?
You can release it manually too, if you peel back the carpet you'll easily see how it works. You'll need to do this anyway to get to the solenoid which you need to test.
You'll find the solenoid attached to a crappy tab of metal on the right of the boot as you look in. Unscrew the bolts and disconnect it from the centre catch and it lifts out. You can the test it by touching the terminals to the battery.
The solenoids are cheap to get and fit. You'll find it in Maplins.
Details are in the Griffith Parts List

The Boot lock solonoid burning out is a very common problem, its actually a motor but commonly referred to as a solonoid. The main culprit is the boot lock button on the dash sticking in thus causing the motor to run continuously.

A simple circuit can eliminate this risk:

Or even simpler, if you do not need the panic alarm button (superfluous IMHO) (next to the dash button) just wire them both in series so that they both have to be pushed into release the boot. This does mean dash out though.

Best of luck!

Thanks to everyone, i've fixed the boot release, it was the motor burned out due to the button being stuck as suggested. and i had knocked the dash lights off on the button under the dash.
