Having trouble getting the mirror glass out to get to the torx screw to tighten it up. Glass was already marked but I ended up breaking it getting it off. The lever at the bottom didn't release the glass.

Is the unit loose? If it's rotating then you need to access the grub screw, your approaching the torx screw from the wrong end as it is inside the toadstool accessed from inside the door panel but you can't get on easily from there. To get to the grub screw it's easier to take the mirror off and tighten up then replace unit or take it to Neils.
I don't know about removing the glass/mirror from a Griff, but I recently removed the glass/mirror from my Golf GTI.
I used masking tape to make a sort of sling, two of them, which I slid behind the mirror, either side of where the mirror attaches to the swivel mechanism. Get the slings as close to the swivel mechanism as possible, as if they are too close to the outer edges of the mirror, the mirror will bend = break (as happened to me, darn).
Whatever you do, if there is room to put your finger behind the mirror to pull it out, DO NOT TRY IT! Again, it will break (as happened to me a second time!)
For the masking tape sling, I used two lengths of tape for each sling and stuck them together, sticky sides facing each other.

5.0ltr is right, if the problem is that your mirror is loose on the door. Unfortunately there is no point taking out the glass, you need to tighten up the grub screw, which is a pig of a job without unscrewing the mirror assembly right off the door. I speak from bitter experience, having followed the same route as yourself. I actually found that the die-cast assembly that screws onto the toadstool had sheared and I had to buy another at some extortionate cost. There are other threads on this forum on this. If that is not the problem and the mirror adjustment assembly is loose then, to my recollection, the torx screws can all be accessed fairly easily. PeteThe mirror is loose and rocking up and down. That's why I think the torx screw is loose.

If I can get to the three screws to take the casing off with the plastic assembly in place that's fine.
There was epoxy behind the mirror so I guess the lever mechanism had played up in the past.

I have worked on my mirror many a time. You cannot access the grub screw by stripping the mirror externally, some of that written in the bible is not quite correct on mirrors I have found. Taking the mirror off complete and fixing on a bench is the easiest saving hours of messing about.
I was so fed up with that mirror design that I gave it all up and went for Audi TT bits instead, the car being resprayed so colour didn't matter. Now I have to create some home-made brackets to make them fit but I think it's worth it. The shape of the mirror housing looks better too IMO.
The plastic bit full of bits of sticky is the backing 'plate' for the mirror.
Some mirrors come with the plate, some don't. So see if you can get it off without damaging it because it might come in useful.
There is a little tab at the bottom which you slide sideways and the backing plate should just drop off - usually with the mirror attached if you haven't broken it.
