I know this is a topic that often strikes up: 'Who Cares?' But for what ever reason never been bothered about how many MPGs i'm getting. However returning my car from Blackpool down to the West Country a week last Saturday became the excellent opportunity (which I did not set out to do) to find out! I filled the tank right up (as you do!) at Blackpool and headed south with a few added minor detours on route and then my next use a couple of days later with less than quarter in the tank I drove further south to Warminster - With the aid of Google maps this came to exactly 250 miles. When filling up the tank again, this came to £52.28 and I had placed 45.11 litres in there. Just over 45 litres works out a fraction short of 10 gallons - Giving me a run of 25mph - Not bad for a 5 litre car!

Thank you! I'm very interested in this (but shouldn't be with this kind of car). I'd heard mid 20s was possible and was keen to find out if it can be beaten!

Sir, I challenge you to get the best consumption!

When the engine in my 500 was standard I managed 29 mpg on a mainly motorway run from the Lake District to Bristol. It won't do that now...

25.75mpg in convoy to Burghley House and back last month. Another Griff was doing a tank every 90mins!

Interesting guys.... I was told last summer that my fuel consumption would be better by all of 2 - 3 miles per gallon as per Lloyd Developments when I had the new Canems ECU unit fitted and remapped. I have no idea what I was getting before hand. Coming down from Blackpool last week, was a good run, the motorway was quiet and mainly sticking to lanes 1 and 2 - due to having the respray only two weeks before hand and the paint was described as 'soft' and needs another two to three weeks to properly harden - therefore it was mostly 60 / 70mph all the way down. Yeah, I think we're be lucky to get better figures beyond 25mpg for the old five litre! After all the engine is now 20 years old!

When I first drove my griff home from David Hendry cars managed 278 miles on a tank can't remember how much it was to fill 11yrs ago but I seem to remember 29 mpg was what it worked out at mind you it was raining a lot of the time so roof on and bricking it as previous car was a Alfa 145 cloverleaf bit of a difference .

Average of 20 mpg over 2000 mls with my Griff 4.0 HC .
25 mpg seems quite unreachable, and it's not that I race it.
But never did a long trip.

My Tuscan was more economical....(petrolwise...)

A 400 with a good after market ECU with a lean map will touch 30mpg ,no chance of that with the 5l.

Not sure if you mean pre-cat Griff 400 or 400 in general... But I've been tracking my fuel with Fuelly.com to see if I can ever hit that 30mpg I've read about.

Just a little game I play, but also if there is a sudden change in the figure then it can maybe lead to the fact there is a problem brewing.

Best I've had so far 27.51 (263 miles) 80% motorway at speeds 65-75 apart from a hold up for 40 mins stop start 0-40.

Av over 12,171 is 22.5 with the journeys I travel, but had many 25's and a few 27's on the 58 tanks I fill until the cut off point. Pretty sure without that hold up for 40mins I would of hit the 30mpg crysmile

It's here if you want to take a peek.

Change the diff ration to ether a 3.23 or 3.08 and you will see a big difference .

I wouldn't know how to....

What would I loose by doing this,a bit of top end speed? How do I know what I've got now?

I just put the average being low because of the many shortish journeys I do added to the routes I drive + feathering the throttle to get pops and bangs doesn't help (But it's worth itbiggrin)

If you remember Daz I'm also no good with my handful of spanners if these are needed to alter it.

EDITED

Fook that for a game of soldiers.... I've just googled it eek But thanks for the suggestion Daz

First trip after collecting my 500 from TVR-MADS:
Mileage at TVR-MADS = 26871
Mileage at Leatherhead =27110
Distance travelled = 239 miles
Fuel = 35.34l (7.77 gallons)
Gives 30.75mpg !

OK, there were a lot of roadworks on the M1 and I was keeping company with a mate driving my 1.9 TDi A6 so very steady pace. However, it's fitted with the Torqueflow TF500 induction kit and is a lot happier at lower revs than other Griffs I've had, 30mpg not typical but noticeably more economical than my other two 500s.

Really hope my gauge is reading less than is in the tank, just dropped below 3/4s on around 65 miles.

Just got back from a holiday in Germany.....
1700 miles (a lot at 110mph and some at 140+) on 275 litres (at around £1 per litre!!)
Works out at 27.4mpg.
Mightily impressed with my '500' now
