Cutting Out on Acceleration

Hi guys,
I am new to Griffith ownership and am over the moon to have this awesome car. What a joy!
I am, however, experiencing a teething problem. Car is a 1996 500hc
In the last month, the car has had the Coil replaced.
Last week drove for about 30-40 mins, not pushing it hard, but enjoying it. I then turned right at a small island, and accelerated in 3rd up a moderate hill up to 40mph. Engine then cut out and I nursed it into a side road. Couldn't restart it. It wanted to turnover, but just having caught, it would cut out again. Tried about 3 times.
Left it for 5 hours, it had obviously cooled down, and it started just fine. Drove home.
I have been out in it twice since for about 15-20 mins or so, and no problems during this short time.
The garage is collecting it next week to investigate, but I wondered if from the symptoms I described, anyone would care to offer their thoughts and suggestions?

It could be ignition amp but are you sure the new coil is OK, they can suffer similarly, i.e, a faulty coil (or an incorrect type fitted) may well be OK when cold but can fail when hot.
I had a problem on another TVR a while back and changed all the ignition components only to find the fault was the original coil, but the new replacement coil was the wrong type and showed the same fault so I effective went round in circles for weeks. A branded Bosch or maybe Lucas coil should be OK but beware of Chinese / Indian products as these are often unmarked as to voltage and type.

I have had a 97 500 for the last few years. The servicing is done at X Works which as you can imagine is staffed by a couple of the guys who were in the service dept at TVR. They are very knowledgeable and at the first service (I had a couple of minor niggles for them to sort but it was running OK) Heath showed me the coil which he said was one of the original (cheap) ones that TVR sometimes fitted; from memory it had brown bakelite at the top and if you scraped that with your finger nails it came away in little bits - so as Heath said those old coils need replacement or they will cause trouble with damp/breaking down. He said from experience it might be Ok for a while but would eventually cause a problem which might happen at any time; mine was replaced with a Bosch one and since then has been fine.

OK thanks. Intermittent faults are the worst to locate. I'd be tempted to cut and run on the original cause; change the coil and the ignition amp. I recently replaced my coil due to intermittent break down. From memory it was around £70 for a Bosch unit. Ignition amp someone mentioned around £20. You could easily spend that on further diagnostics of the original, yet to be repeated fault.

Jurgen, your problem doesn't sound fuel related, but if you havnt already done so, get the fuel filter changed. The filter in my one was very old and it ran noticeably better with a new filter. They are a bit of a fiddle to get to, probably why people neglect changing them.
Whilst under there get them to check the condition of the fuel hoses and their retaining jubilee clips as these corrode very badly and once they let go fuel will seep out.
My old MX5 when turning a corner sharply would cut out, but would re start again. The filter was clogged.
When the Bosch coil failed on my Griff 2 summers ago, it just died and that was it. I initially thought I had run out of fuel, as I was very low, but it was the coil.
An Intermotor one was fitted and it started straight away.
However a few weeks ago it started running rough as if it was only firing on 6 or 7 cylinders. I limped back and it finally died and will not start. I have fuel and a spark.
