Veneered dash?
Discussion
I have removed the old 'burr walnut' veneer from my dash and am wondering if it ever really was wood veneer. What's come off is about 1mm thick and has a thick lacquer coat on the face side. What surprises me is that the reverse is very smooth (where it was stuck to the metal base) but has absolutely no sign of any woodgrain. It appears to be almost like a thin sheet of perspex with a woodgrain printed on the back.
Anyone know if it really was wood?

I've just removed mine, and, like yours, my veneer(if it is!) is like a cheap slice of ham.!! I'd be surprised if it is woodAnyone know if it really was wood?

Just starting to do the dash on my Chim.
The veneer was so loose it was only held on by the instruments.
Surprised to find the steel had never had any form of paint or other corrosion protection either under the veneer or on the back face.
Grit blasted the steel and sprayed it with zinc primer.
Need to order the veneer now

Steve, mine wasn't painted either...no wonder the veneer falls off.
Would be very interested to see more pics. and info as you progress.
Some interesting ideas here on alternative brackets.

so a second batch of dashboard is a go already?
Hi Rob, you are on my next batch list! I will need to finish the current batch (hopefully due for completion end of Feb early March). Also I need to restock with veneer, backing board etc. Shall keep you posted! Regards, PeteQBee said:
I would be interested in a later Chimaera dash (mine's a 99, so mark 2) if you are doing one, please, PeteGriff. No hurry, as and when.
Hi QBee, I am in the preliminary development stage at the moment. I have both a Mk1 and 2 dash to use as patterns for the development. Shall put a post out once I have finished the work and am pleased with prototypes etc. All the best, PeteGassing Station | Griffith | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
