...I worked it out the other day, and when commuting to work (2 miles town stop start stuff, then about a mile and a half of dual carriageway taken gently as still cool fluids) I'm getting 8 miles to the gallon.

Yep, EIGHT.

I don't really care about mpg, and if anything, it kinda makes me love the noisy brute even more, but is that normal thirst for a 99 5.0?

My wife's petrol Saab did 37 mpg on a steady run, at 56 mph for mile after mile up the A17 last month.
It does under 20 mpg average doing the grand-kids-to-school run (half a mile each way) and going shopping (4 miles each way).

My 500 Chim does about 21 mpg on a good run.
It did 8 mpg yesterday evening, commuting around a 2.1 mile loop in the Lincolnshire countryside. whistle

Anything above 8 to the gallon sounds like a wasted opportunity to me. AIMHO thumbup

My diseasel Audi A8 used to start off at 15mpg on the dash board read out.
After 4 miles it was reading 21 mpg.
After 10 miles it was averaging high 20s.
After 100 miles, 44 mpg overall.

Hope this helps - you barely got the automatic choke turned off....

When you start from cold, the ecu chucks LOADS of extra fuel in.

Who cares! Just drive it! I have no idea what my Griff does, just fill it up when needed. Enjoyment factor only. Let's make the best of our cars before the Eurocrats, Government apologists and enviro warriors take control of everything we hold dear!

Checked your fuel hoses? wink
These cars are so lightweight and so torquey once warm the mpg should be fairly good on a cruise.
I have the economy 4.0 version - never worked it out that accurately but its over 20 to the gallon.
Pete's right - life is too short. If someone invented a TVR today, it would be banned. Oh hang on...

He isn't complaining about cruise mpg.
He is saying that he does a 3.5 mile commute twice a day, and on those journeys it is averaging 8 mpg.

Lovely photo, sorry mate, did not respond to offend at all, just my point of view. Fully understand you had a valid point, and yes that does seem low, but as someone previously stated there is a lot of fuel going through early on until fully warmed up. Enjoy...

Not terribly surprised on such a short journey, I get ~18mpg on a 25 mile commute but more like 28mpg on a long motorway run.

I once decided to check my fuel consumption and did a full tank to full tank and got 22 mpg but that included a longish journey down to the outlaws in Dorset and included other short journeys so 8 mpg or whatever for 2 miles doesn't surprise me one bit.

It doesn't sound like you are that fussed so I'm with the other Pete, just enjoy it, although these short journey commutes may not do your engine much good but they are easily rebuilt......! Pete

Yeah, I don't want it to be my sole commute vehicle, so looking for something sensible to trundle to work in. V12 Jag XJS should do it biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Or, as an alternative, find some good roads, extent the commute to, lets say, 30 miles > better economy > more grins > win/win ! biggrin

8MPG does sound very low. Mine averages 21MPG on a run and about 12MPG around town in the winter is the traffic is bad.

It might be worth keeping a note of the MPG to make sure that is not a freak occurrence, may indicate something not quite right.

After a cock up with rolling road fuelling set up, had bore wash, loss of compression ! Rebuild again. I would get it checked. A tad pricey to ignore.

I've been looking at at the last of the Jag XJ Series, aluminium body and all that leather and walnut and a very 'sensible' car, trouble is I can't get the wimmin in my household around to the idea. They say it's an old fcensoreds car, maybe they are right, I'll stick to the Disco or the Golf tdi....! Pete
