Just when the car is looking stunning after the respray and the sun has come out. furious

On the way to Breakfast Club at Goodwood last weekend the engine started making a really nasty banging noise. Stopped the car and got trailered home, stripped the exhaust manifolds off yesterday and today, hoping that it was just a blown exhaust manifold gasket but they are fine.

So next I'll drop the sump and probably strip the inlet manifold off so I can see what is what. However, whatever I find I suspect some sort of rebuild is going to be needed. I'll pul the engine out at home and ship it off to be fixed and then I can clean up the engine bay in the meantime.

Oh well at least it will end up a bit better after all this work.

Colin, sorry to here this, especially after all the work so far! Well with the engine rebuild now and your 'new dash' you will know that the whole car is spot on! All the best, Pete

Well the bottom of the engine looked fine and I couldn't see anything untoward so stripped off the rockers......

At least you`ve found it. Never seen that before though.

Any obvious damage to tops of valves etc or are you lucky.

Heres hoping to a cheap fix and you can carry on with Summer motoring.

Hows the cam lobe and follower on the affected valve, seen as constant pressured contact between cam and follower may have been lost.

Closer inspection tomorrow, when I've finished stripping the inlet off. Haven't checked the valve tops yet but the rockers have some marks on them The pushrod for that valve had slipped down a bit which I suspect is the noise I could hear, it doesn't look bent or damaged though. The rocker was sat in the corner of the head. Need to check the follower on that valve. The rod itself looks like it has just snapped around the hole for the pedestal bolt. The two pieces fit together cleanly and there aren't any bits missing.

I'll probably put a new cam , follower, rods and rockers in anyway. The engine has done 50k so unless I'm really lucky I expect there will be some cam wear by now.

That is very strange and hopefully nothing more serious. If you're quick and buy a second hand rocker assembly of ebay we'll see your Griff again at the next TVR Berkshire pub meet. Good Luck.

We had that a few years ago on the race (MGBV8 at the time). Check the bottom end carefully too - oil pressure will have been lost as it will escape to the area offering the least resistance! Ours ended up welding the rod to the crank!! Literally!

You can get outriggers now for the rocker shafts - well worth fitting if you are replacing them anyway - stops the extra flex/load on the outer rockers! John Eales does them, and sure others will too!

Good look with the fix!

Thanks, that's good information.

John Eales also does billet steel rocker shafts. With all the bad reviews about OEM parts on the various forums, I'd go with a pair from him along with the outrigger posts. Not too expensive for the peace of mind.
