The long thin water hose from the swirl tank to the bottom of the radiator (?) has split. Can someone tell me if this is the correct part:

For the fitting is it a matter of undoing one end or the other and simply replacing or do I have to do something clever to avoid an airlock? Also the car has lost a bit of water - am I right I thinking I top it up at the the expansion tank?

Yes, that's the one...the one from the top of the swirl pot to the bottom of the expansion tank.
Yes - top up from exp tank.
See here for more info - Johno post, last method is what I used for recent rad change....http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=261027&mid=0&nmt=Cooling+System+Bleeding....link also from Griffith parts list sticky.
Assuming the level in the swirl pot has dropped (check by opening the top brass screw cap, when cool) -simply remove hose. Also good to remove exp tank and give it a good clean if it has not been done in a while, checking for any blockages/silt etc at bottom. Check also swirl small pipe on which the hose attaches for any blockages or build up which may restrict flow.
Fit new hose.
Top up swirl pot right to the top of threads and close brass screw. Fill exp tank appx 2" from bottom. Turn heater knob to full/open. Run engine with blue exp tank cap off to allow air to bubble through into exp tank.
Ensure no more than 2" from bottom (though will vary car to car) - any more and it may overflow when running with cap off. Once bubbles reduce/stop, fit cap. Run and recheck level when cool as per above post.

....and just for clarity, keep adding a little coolant/water mix at a time as the exp tank reduces as the air bubbles through, maintaining the appx 2" from bottom.
