I have had the Griff for a few years now and think it may be time to have the outriggers done.

I have noticed various prices and in particular RPB Motors offer to do the complete outrigger replacement for £1750 all in.
I think they do this without removing the body, any thoughts or experience would be helpful.

Thanks.

Had mine done by Colin at TVRSSW, he doesn't take the body off, I have found her more rigid since, but just left it with him and collected it a few weeks later, would need to did out a price, but didn't 'cos you in scotland and he's by Taunton.

But it is done and works

I am not too bothered about the distance as I would incorporate visiting friends. I am more interested in the job done well at a fair price.

Not trying to be funny, but I suspect you won't really find 'fair price' from any TVR specialist. As they know they can massively over charge and people will pay it.

I'm not 100% sure what is involved in replacing these outriggers. But I suspect it's nothing overly major if the body is being left in place. I assume it's cut off old bits, weld on new. Either as a complete off the shelf part, or as it's only tubing, fabricate yourself. Looks like straight sections in pics online, so pretty simple.

Or put it this way, I can't believe it's any more difficult or complex than replacing the outriggers on a Land Rover (totally different kind of outrigger, but same principle).

£1750 would seem quite a lot IMO for the amount of work involved.

Sorry 300 but this is bks.
To do the job properly needs a body lift at the minimum if not a complete body off to check the bits of the outriggers you cant normally see, if you arent doing it yourself then you are paying someone for quite a lot of labour so IMO £1750 doesnt seem too bad (for both sides)

Body lift required to enable a full weld around the tubes. The body sits pretty much onto the tubing.

I believe that small holes are cut in the floor for a full weld and then made good.

Let's face it the fibreglass is only 2 to 3 mm thick in those areas. Actually I would be tempted to do the job myself .

Cut off the old, give to your local metal worker to make up a kit of parts, (just like the kits you can boy) and fit. I believe Discopotatoes used a nice joiner when he did his chassis.

Be aware I am biased, I have been using Colin for years and trust him, in my opinion, yes to both questions, if you call him he will provide a guide price.

Just beware his newfoundland might take your car over.

Just to add, he made sure to show me the removed out riggers and explained his work.

The most important thing with this job is to end up with SAFE WELDS.

You really dont want to find out that that someone has done a cheap st job when somelone T bones you at a junction.

Go talk to the guys at DG Sportscars in Redditch aka David Gerald TVR.

They do the job properly with chassis matched up to jig then lift the whole body off cut out the out riggers inspect and repair the main chassis if needed then make new outriggers to exactly the same dimensions as the old ones.

You only need this done once so do yourself a favour and make sure you get it done properly and are safe.

Agree completely - I looked at loads of Griffs and a few had some seriously odd-looking welds on their 'replaced' outriggers.
There's someone on here who found bits of playground swing in his... isn't waxoyl and underseal wonderful...
I'd get the welder to add some seat mounts while he's in there as well.

Might be worth getting a quotation from www.sportmotive.com and while you're there get Ian to drop in a LS3

If I don't sell up soon, this will be on my list and Sportmotive will be my garage of choice.

Another vote for X Works. I've not had mine done but have been there several times and have seen the quality of work so well worth considering.

If your outriggers are looking the worst for wear, whats the remainder of your chassis looking like?

Wishbones, main rails especially underneath the body and manifolds.

I don't know what your budget is for this,Sometimes its worth to bite the bullet and getting the whole chassis done in one go rather than requiring another bodylift in afew years time?

Actually the chassis etc looks good.
I recently had the engine out for rebuild work and looked right along the tunnel and it's all in good nick.
I am really only wanting the outriggers done as a precaution due to the cars age.

SD Autotec at Boroughbridge will be doing my Griff Restoration when it needs it !

Steve Darvill is a top bloke, time served (proper apprenticeship), well known and respected in the TVR community.

Well worth a phone call, he will give honest help and advice.

I would recommend RT Racing of Sheffield. They make Griff chassis's from scratch, know what they are doing and are good on price.

Richard Thorpe, the owner, is a sensible, down-to-earth bloke.

I have spoken to a few companies now and it seems that it is possible to replace the outriggers properly without the body off.
Various methods are used but I like the sound of the X Works TVR option.

I'll put the funds together and then book it in.

Cheers!
