I know this has probably been asked a thousand times but I have been given so many varying views that I thought I should check.

I am under the impression that I can use unleaded and super unleaded in my 1992 4 precat. (97 and 98 ron)

I was told however by a mechanic at a main dealer for TVR,s "NEVER EVER" (I quote!) put unleaded fuel into a precat unless you put in an additive "YOU WILL RUIN IT AND NEED A NEW ENGINE" ( I quote!)

This is totally opposite to everything else I have been told.

Anyone have the definative answer?

Complete Bollox, Pre-Cats can use either.

tims' spot on mike,you may need to adjust timing if it pinks on normal unleaded and you wish to continue using it,but other than that its ok to use anything in a pre-cat,even lrp, except maybe deisel!

Sure he didnt mean Diesel.

Cant believe someone can give this sort of false information,main dealer en all.
Whats to be gained out of it by them??

No idea other than trying to get me to buy a newer one from him,or am I just being cynical.!!??!

It was the guy on the service reception desk so he was probably not qualified to say anyway.

Hello Vestas.When I bought my pre cat Griff 400 the guy told me only to put in LRP fuel.Later I read the car owners hand book and it advised NEVER USE LEADED FUEL even in an emergency as it will damage the oxygen sensors!!! Personally I use Shell Optimax some say they can tell the difference some say they cant but the Griff likes it.Cheers.

Hello 2sheds.Good point.I may be wrong but I think have an 1992 origanal Griff 400 hand book with service history.I may have one of the last Griff 400`s and the hand book may be in anticipation of the arrival of the catalytic 500 Griffs. My handbook Only specifies 4ltr and 4.3ltr griffs, dose the 5ltr handbook ONLY specify that model OR all three???

It should say in the manual, never use leaded petrol on the catalytic exhaust page, which i think they included in anticipation of the looming cat regs, but not relevant to pre-Cat cars.

There is an unleaded decision tree in the bible 2. There is the an unleaded FAQ on my website with all the options.

the 4.xx Griffs did have there own handbook and when the 500 came out, they got the 4.x with a few page supplement and then eventually the 500 manual was issued. the 4.x manuals have long since gone and only the 500 manula is available at around £50 from TVR. so many 4.x owners ended up with the 500 manual as there was no alternative.

Good point, there is no real benefit in using it anyway
mine runs fine on standard unleaded, but always avoid pinking,

I'm no chemist, but I have the idea that there are several different types of lead replacement in use. Each fine on their own perhaps, but I wouldn't want to try mixing them - I think if you're going to use this stuff you should stick to the same brand.

During the fuel strike/blockades a couple of years back my dealer told me my 4.3BV would run on anything that you could get into the tank.

I suggested single malt scotch, which was far easier to come by than petrol at the time, but they clarified and said any petrol, 4 star, unleaded, or super unleaded, but that if I wanted to run on anything other than super unleaded for an extended period I should check with the dealer with regard to timing and/or additives etc.
