fuel----super unleaded?

when i picked the griff up the guy told me he used standard unleaded `runs better on it`. however on the drive home i found during hard acceleration in 4th and 5th the car was pinking----even though it was running at higher revs. the car temp was good so it`s not a running hot thing, if i switched to super would that cure this?

You'll get varying reports.

I was running on normal unleaded for quite a while without problem. Then I started using Optimax. Apart from now needing to buy shares in Shell (and I have just got one of their points cards!) I have noticed:

Less pinking under load
Smoother engine running overall
About the same, or possibly even worse, fuel consumption.

So it costs more and I think it's a personal choice as to whether it is "better".

Oh and it's a pain when you keep driving past fuel, despite the needle boucing off empty, because "it's not Shell, I want Optimax!" Bet your life that you fill up somewhere else and a Shell station turns up just round the corner!!!!!

Er... why not just put a fiver's worth of the other petrol in to get you as far as a Shell station?!

We never put anything in our cars other than Optimax - great stuff! Certainly the TVRs (including the Griff I used to have) and Volvo T5 appreciate it a lot more than regular unleaded. FWIW.

How many tankfuls have you got through?

It took a bit of time before I noticed the difference but after the first thousand tankfuls it was much better

only run about £15 worth through it yesterday, so i guess i`ll have to stay with optimax and hopefully it`ll eventually dissapear.

If it doesn't improve after a couple of tanks get the car to a dealer/specialist and get the timing checked. It could be that the timing has shifted since the last service and that is causing the problem.

When I had my Griff I had this pinking problem after filling up on 95RON - took about three tankfuls of Optimax to sort it.
It's going to be a good weather weekend, get out there and do a couple of tankfuls.

shouldn`t be a timing problem as the car was only serviced a couple of weeks ago by a TVR garage (12000 mile). i`m going to the herts and beds meet next week, anyone else with a griff going?

The Herts/Beds meet was last week - it's the second Sunday in the month, next one is 13 July. See you there (but not in a Griff).

Back to petrol, optimax is defo the best stuff - you might not be able to feel the difference with a V8, but trust me, in my wifeys smart car(3cyl 0.6litre) you can really feel a change in 'performance' compared to supermarket 95ron unleaded. Trust me, at that level you need all the help you can get...
