Was talking to the service manager of a certain SE based main dealer a couple of weeks back about the spiders/brakes upgrade that TVR are offering. I said that it'd look much better with 18" spiders instead of the 16" ones, his response was that there was no way to put 18" spiders on due to tyre/bodywork & tyre/hub clearnce issues.
Now I know that several PH'ers have Griffs with aftermarket 18" rear wheels fitted - did you have to mess around with spacers & different offsets to get them to fit (or go to a smaller width rim)?
Anyone managed to put 18"ers on the front yet?

I'm sure 18"-ers will fit. I looked at them when I bought my new wheels but decided against them because I thought 17" looked better for the particular wheel I had in mind. There are several others though who have gone for 18" and they look great.

All you have to keep in mind is the correct offset and width: don't go for wider rims than original and you'll be fine.

Another thing to consider is the combination dampers-wheels: I have sport dampers and together with my 17" the ride is pretty firm, I wouldn't want it any firmer. 18" could be too much in some cases. Also tramlining increases although when you use the Toyo T1-S's (a must with larger wheels) it's not so bad.

Hi Gerjo, must say that your wheels look the dogs danglies! The only aftermarket set yet that would make me think of changing. I know you've given details of them before, but would you mind repeating?
Already done the suspension/brake upgrade thingy btw.

no problem:

wheels Tecnomagnesio Detroit
4 (stud) x 108, 63.5

front: 7 x 16 ET25
rear: 7.5 x 17 ET37

they fit straight on

what brakes did you go for? like 'm?

Problem with the 18" spiders is the narrowest width they do is 8.5J so it's the physical width of alloy plus rubber that's the problem not the diameter. The 16" wheels will be 7.5J so fitting an after market 18" wheel that's a 7.5J width shouldn't be a problem. Overall wheel diameter shuld remain pretty much the same when going from 16" to 18" because of a reduction in tyre profile.

I've got 4 pot HiSpec billet calipers with 283(or 285 - can't remember)mm drilled/grooved discs on the front & standard sized drilled/grooved discs on the back, EBC green pads all round. Yes I'm happy with them, although I'd fit bigger front discs if I was to go up in wheel diameter.

Ah, didn't know they were 8.5" wide. I can see why that'd cause probs.

That's a coincidence, I went for the Hispecs as well, be it the 4 pot with 310 front and 300 rear (one of the advantages of larger wheels) with Ferodo 2500 pads. I like them too, especially at high speed the braking is amazing!

I have 18" x 8" on the rear of my Griff with no problems - I use a 3mm spacer but wouldn't need it if I had got the correct offset. These are fitted with SO2pp 255/35x18 (will go for 245/35x18 next time since Toyo offer this size. Cheers Rich... p.s. see profile for more info.

LF,

How near is the Griffith to being ready then ?

Just to jump a thread .... what would be the biggest disc I could fit into a 16' wheel. Would it be 300 mm ??

Allowing for the 3mm spacer I have 37mm - I was wrongly advised to go for 40mm when I ordered them, see wheels for the full story!

At the beginning of last week I was told 2 weeks time, so fingers crossed it'll be pretty soon - you'll know I've got it back when the weather turns!

Gerjo,

May I take a look at your brake upgrade at Zolder. I have been out with LF at Goodwood with his Hi Spec upgrade and I know 2 or 3 other people who have been very happy with their work.

I see you have also gone for Ferodo 2500. Got a friend who rates these above anything else he has used and was in fact using the next compound but has given up on the basis that they EAT discs ! 2500 is not as bad allegedly ..
