It sounds like a tugboat at idle, and under throttle, like a Spitfire taking off. Pops and bangs on the overrun make my tummy turn over.
That what you're looking for?
Aha rumbled! so that's where Joolz got his decription from!... that is exactly how he described mine after he'd done it
Mine also pops and bangs quite nicely, hence why I am really confused as to whether taking the boxes off will make much difference... I will have to come and listen to yours Corinne... just a bummer that Spain clashes with Mania.. are you going to Big Northern gathering by any chance?

BNG - 'fraid not. We're going camping in France for a fortnight the day after, and I didn't fancy getting back from BNG, stuffing everything in to the boot of the Griff and setting straight off for Dover. Joolz was up for it, but concurred with my position when I offered him the unmissable opportunity to take an equal share of the preparation for the holiday...

Hi if I could steal a listen at Mania too please ?

I had straight through pipes put in the rear and precats taken out by Peninsular on my Griff 500.Sound is pure NASCAR with no obvious signs of impact on performance but I do get a bit of crackle and pop if I nail it in low gears!

'Tis an urban myth along with S03 are crap tyres, the cheque's in the post etc. In my experience insufficient silencing nad back pressure actually causes a drop in power. Fitting new silencers to the 520 certainly brought back a smile earlier this year compared to running with straight through caused by a big big hole in the box. Decatting the car with all that lovely space doesn't seem to do anything either from the power curves that I have seen.
I have to say I have come to the conclusion that leaving well alone is the best policy. It allows you to go play on trcaks without having to worry, doesn't wreck your hearing and so on.

So, bearing the above in mind, would I be better off putting mine back to standard?

How about just doing what you want?
We all fall in to the trap of thinking everyone should want what we do. If you want to be on track days all the time, keep it quiet. If (like me) you want to be out playing on country roads smiling at the burble/roar/pops then have it noisy. My Chimaera stayed as standard because it sounded great anyway. The Griff didn't, it was quieter than my Avensis and made my number plate look stupid, so it got meddled with. As long as you don't upset anyone, please yourselves
When either local Plod or my next door neighbours ask me to quieten it, I will, without argument. Until then, the judge's (for this read my) decision is final.

Much as I love the noise, it's GRRRRunt that really gets me going, so if having a quieter car means better running and more power then for me that's the way to go. Of course if I could have both noise and power then so much the better!!! Perhaps I should get it on the rolling road to see what it's making?
So from the point of view of maximum oomph, which is better, standard or loud?

Keep it standard. However you are probably looking at a new exhaust so it is not that cheap to change back. But you have only had the car a short time so I would do nothing but get used to it. You say it is lacking in performance... that can be how you are driving and using the engine power. They can be driven with lots of burble at low revs but for real grunt it needs a lot of welly. The problem is that the big load of welly can be scary and difficult to get down. So enjoy the car, get used to it and then see what you want to do.
Thank you sir, you seem like an eminently sensible man. This is my first powerful rwd drive car (always rally specials and motorbikes before), so cautious is my middle name. It's just that the acceleration isn't quite as good as I was expecting from reading reviews etc. It's noticeably faster than my work colleagues power engineering modified impreza, but maybe I was expecting it to be more like a motor bike after reading the on paper figures. Still I'm a total novice with this type of car so maybe it's for the best. The important thing is that I smile every time I look at her, let alone drive her. Hopefully we'll have a long and happy friendship!!!

Don't know about Steve being sensible... with a modified 520SE wedge
He does however have his name in probably 90% of TVR owners houses or TVR boots. He is the 'bible' man - praise the Lord! :bowsdownwearenotworthy:
nb: just hope i don't need your book Steve over the next couple of weeks
burriana500 said:Eh? from what Steve has said he's noticed no difference between catted and de-catted/straight through or silenced pipes so it's going to be 4.1 either way All I would add is that you need to take advice from several people and make your own decision. Certainly many well respected guru's believe that removing the pre-cats (not main cat) gives better exhaust flow back close to the exhaust valves and makes tuning of the "Tornado" chip easier giving another 8-10 bhp/torque. Just what I've heard. Rich...
So whaddya want? 60 in 4.1 and a great sounding car... or 60 in 4.5 in a WHATS THAT YOU SAID???
