I noticed today that the petrol cap on my 1992 Griff doesn't appear to be one that allows breathing. I think it was replaced at some point. On TVRgear they have official ones for Griff 500 but not for 4.3 - is it the same ? Anyone know where I can get a proper petrol cap with the correct breath setting ?

Mines like that too, just a flat chrome cap and no breather that I can see. Doesn’t the tank breathe through a separate tube.

Cheers,

Simon

The tank normaly breathe's through a special carbon filter. It seems that a lot of these don't work the way they should anymore. Maybe just needs to be replaced, wich is one hell of a job i heard. It may be easyer to replace the cap with on that does have a small hole to breath through.

I went through this a while ago, I had fitted a Leven cap which is not vented, and was told by both a main dealer and an Indie that in their experience this was not a good idea and to refit the old cap, I had not had any running problems under any conditions with the Leven cap fitted. I had an a spare identical steel original cap available, and out of curiosity cut it up to see if the sprung seal part had any venting that was not obvious, and it was apparent with it all in bits that there was no venting on the cap and the sprung plate was just there to provide a good seal to the tank neck.
My car is an early build and does not have the carbon filter as mentioned by previous poster, and appears to have a simple vent pipe from the tank, not sure if this is applicable to the 4.3, I take the point that if a carbon is fitted it could cause problems through aging, and I too have been told access to change this is a nightmare. There is a slight difference in the spec for caps on late Griffs, maybe a call to Simon at Leven would be helpful. To sum up, if the vent system is OK, you don't need a vented cap.

Good Luck,
Griffer

The carbon filter on early cars is hidden behind the fuel tank and cannot be seen. Its fed by the small tube coming from the lower half of the filler neck.

My cap doesn't have a breather either which is a good thing otherwise everything would smell of petrol!!
