4.2 AJP in Griff progress
Discussion
A few people have asked me how things are progressing with the ajp v8 install in my griff, so I`ve decided to put a few bits up on here now and again to show those interested how things are going.
2 months ago I bought this ;
it was a running engine, but decided to do some investigation work, which led to a complete strip down, and after finding a few nasties I am now in the process of getting all of the parts needed so as to rebuild the engine over the christmas holiday.
the shopping list so far includes;
3 new liners, ,main shells and big end shells,
Total Seal pistonrings from the states. (big thanks to mike, BoostedLs1)
new inlet valves (later type).
head gaskets, crank oil seals ect.
Timing chain.
Raceproved clutch kit and lightened flywheel.
Raceproved pre oiler kit.
I`ve so far ported the cylinder heads and had them skimmed, removing 1mm from each,
Joo at TCS has ported the inlets/throttle bodies for me, thanks Joo.
And the ally casings, heads, inlets, rocker covers, timing cover, fuel rail etc have just returned from being aquablasted. ( a water blasting process using extremely fine particles of powdered glass).
So tommorow its all off to the paint shop, as I have a rather sexy colour scheme in mind, as you know I like a blingy engine bay
here`s some pics of the bits after aquablasting;
will post some more pics up as things progress, just hope it doesn`t all turn around and bite me on the bum.

Looking good. Remind me to ask you about the pre-oiler wiring when we next speak...
Hi Dave, haven`t got it yet, Joo will send it down as soon as he can get it from Russell, so not sure on the wiring side of things, probably go for a basic seperate on and off switch, not sure yet.clive f said:

Hello Clive
Glad to see things are moving on apace, good project this one.
For your pre-oiler wiring if may make a suggestion based on my experience of running an accusump in my cerb, wire it in to the igntion switch on igntion postion but fit an in-line switch as well as soemtimes you just want to flick the ignition on without purging your pre-oiler.
Also 1mm off the heads sounds like quite a lot how much CR are you going for?
Matt

Hi Matt, not sure on what compression ratio the 1mm skim will give, just going on the advice given by reputable engine builders and that 1mm is the maximum to go to, as per the red rose conversion.

Hi Clive,
After reading your post I was just wondering what made you decide to ditch the Rover V8 and install the AJP V8?? Don't get me wrong im not going to suggest one is better then the other, just what were your reasons for doing this. Thanks
to be honest I`ve really enjoyed chasing the bhp numbers, either with add on bits or developing bits like the exhaust myself, and having reached 337bhp decided that to go any further will loose a lot of the smoothness and low down drivablity around town, basically what you gain at the top end you loose at the bottom.After reading your post I was just wondering what made you decide to ditch the Rover V8 and install the AJP V8?? after talking to mike virgo at last years growl, and then having a drive in his ajp griff I fell in love with it, smooth as you like around town, just like driving your every day car, yet bury the pedal over 4000rpm and what a beast, so my aim is a 400 + bhp 4.2, and before anyone suggests it, no I did not want to use a chevy engine, for me its a TVR, and should be the same under the bonnet
Hi Clive, I see you've upped the CR with a head skim; out of interest, have you had a go yet at reassembling the heads and inlets, and seeing whether your fuel rail still goes on? I only say that because I have a high comp ajp with 4.2 inlets, and as a result of the head skimming, the position of the inlets changed, meaning that I had to fabricate a custom fuel rail. You might well get away with it on yours, as theres always a bit of wiggle in the injector ports, but it might be something to bear in mind.
Speaking of fuel rails, I dont suppose you need a set of uprated injectors? I have a set of 8 new flow matched bosche design 3's good for about 430bhp at cerb fuel pressures.
Best of luck anyway mate- keep us updated!

Fair play to you and Hope you have all the luck in the world with your project!Show that it's not just in the domaine of other people!Like luck normally is!

[quote]Thanks Clive, Will you miss the Rover's great V8 burble or do you like the AJP V8 instead? You did extremely well getting 337BHP from the Rover engine!!!

I will miiss the rv8 on low rpm, but think the ajp sounds better in the high revs, but particularly like the pops and bangs, I had my car mapped for this by Joo and I loved it to bits, but the ajp does it "without being made to" so to speak, so overall the ajp just has the edge.

starting to look the business, got the cylinder heads back from the spray shop tonight, and the rest of the bits should be done before christmas.
they will look better once all of the masking tape is removed, but thought they looked good enough for a pic anyway
As a Well Known Bling Fan i have to Say they will look better once all of the masking tape is removed, but thought they looked good enough for a pic anyway
Far better than Red Clive !!
