Clive.

If you have any play at all in the diff mount you will have an almighty clonking.

This mount has to be torqued to about 56 ft lbs, I took drastic action and all clonking solved!

As to the whine, mine has a minor whine that hasn't changed for 3 years, maybe tadts!
Picked up a used diff today, thanks Tim hope you had a good day at the races..
Intend to get it checked out and then just bolt in, I will then take a look at the old one.
I think I may have mislead you about the "clunk" its not a heavy one by any means and it isnt any worse or better no matter how much grunt you give it, if you time the gear change well then you cant hear anything. The whine is not bad but it is there. Maybe I am being a little fussy. Being in engineering can sometimes be a burden!
Thanks for all the input guys, loads of very helpful replies.....ta Clive.

Mine clunked on take off when i first looked at it prior to purchase, was a loose mount which was quickly sorted, also its had a pronounced whine which has not changed/got worse in the last two years (actually its not really a bearing whine as i know it,more of a zinging noise, its hard to explain).... cant hear it with the roof off anyways, just when top on windows up.

Rigga that sounds very similar to mine,i even purchased a spare diff for rebuild in case(less downtime) but found mine as not got worse in over 3 years and have since driven Griffs & Chims with un-silent diffs so can only assume the fact that one's ear hole is right next to the diff as the cause rolleyes

Having gradually taken my griff further on, ie rebuilt engine new clutch etc"i am now at the diff...it has a really annoying whine and a clunk if you dont get the gear change perfect! ok ok i must do better ...do i go down the Quaife route or just try and get it rebuilt? I dont at this time think I will track it as I am not a good enough driver but it needs sorting...also just got the four poster lift from Fred so no excuse for getting it out, 7 days delivered and the best value i could find IMHO...
sorry clive, but couldn't put it better myself wink

Simon, thats pretty much the opinion i sourced from a couple of guys about it,your virtually sitting on top of the diff, seperated by a bit of fiberglass and trim,so i doubt there are many totally silent diffs out there, all must be audible to a certain degree.

Nice one Martin beer always nice to get another opinion on this kind of thing wink glad i purchased a spare anyways,i get the impression they are hard to find nowadays and seeing as my brothers Chim as a GKN unit at least one spare between the 2 of us should be enough biggrin just out of imterest when i re-carpeted my Chim last year i put a nice thick layer of sound deadening felt under the carpet on the rear deck and that as improved things to the point its barely audible even with the roof on ears

All 3 of my previous Griffs and the one I have just bought have had some Diff noise and whine I think it is probably a case of TADTS!

Careful with that extension bar Quinny you may scratch the chassis redcard seriously Quinny that's a good video to help anyone who is not familiar with this job thumbup like the bit about checking the filler before draining wonder how many people have founds out the hard way? eek T5GRF i am beginning to think that seems to be the case as long as it does not change in characteristics i.e grinding/whining louder etc wink

Thinking of doing this to my griff, what size holes did you cut and is there a guide at all? Good clunk from my gkn diff

My Chim has a small clunk when setting off in either forward or reverse, so feels like a loosened mount.

Did you need to drill those holes?
Assume they're in the parcel shelf?

Can you describe your investigation and method?
Probably simple and just a case of looking, but I like to get my head around a task before telling my wife it'll only take half an hour biggrin

Process for diagnosis was car in pit and a guy viewing what it did was doing as I engaged, didn’t even need to move the car to see it or hear it. Just letting off the clutch.

No holes needed.

Then It was exhaust off, locate the front diff mounting bracket bolts (2 each side) and undo the nuts enough for you to then tighten up the Allen key bolts. Then finally retighten the nuts, to hold it in place. The chassis crossmember can get in the way a bit, then exhaust back on and job done
