Precat Stewart warner replacem Speedo head upgrade group buy
Discussion
Fellow precat owners lend me your ears!!!
After some digging and talking to a precat owner down south , it seems Speedy cables can produce new replicas of the Stewart Warner speedo.
This will have a digital odometer, which can be programmed to your existing mileage.
The speedo will run from a sensor ala the later cars (which would be extra) and do away with the expensive and rare getting gearbox sender.
I have spoke to Speedy today and if 10 of us want one the cost is £180 +carriage+ vat but -30% !!!
This could be an opportunity to get away from an old , difficult to repair and pretty much obsolete speedo head.
Any takers?????

If I was you I'd check with ETB what they can do. I think they made more of the speedos driven from the crown wheel on the diff, and the speedy/green/caerbont/CAI group made the dials paired with the later ABS sensor on the drive shaft side of the BTR?
It's well worth having a speedo that has some 'user' calibration if you change wheels etc? IMHO.

never got my old speedo returned when they made my new one
Think I have a spare needle from a tacho..... Maybe, probably, a stupid question - are all pre cat senders off the gear box? Mine is a 92 4.0.I'm guessing this would be.
The alternative I guess being offered is the sensor off the prop feeding the diff?
Again, sorry for a stupid question. Why does the dial need to be replaced when the issue is the availability of the sender? Surely, keep the original gauge which looks right and get an alternative sender only.
I am interested, just need to understand why I might be spending a couple of hundred for a sensor issue. I do take on board that the gearbox one is going to be like hens teeth soon.
Thanks, Rich

Yes, all the precat clocks run from the sender in the LT77 gearbox. The alternative I guess being offered is the sensor off the prop feeding the diff?

The Stewart Warner speedo head ,to the best of my knowledge, accept an inductive sensor input, also, it is not able to be calibrated by the user.
The replacement proposed head would require an inductive sensor fitted somewhere, most likely picking up on bolts heads on a CV joint,or prop connection.
Calibration is simple, taking into account revolutions per mile of the fitted tyre size and then the amount of bolt seen per revolution(and possibly diff ratio, depending where the sensor is fitted)
This gives a modern speedo (the Stewart warner clocks were not fitted much later than 1992 by TVR) and also negates the gearbox sender.
That looks very smart.
If you can't get this off the ground just for info the Stewart Warner speedo can be calibrated but you have to open it up and fit diodes inside. I have some information and am currently attempting a speedo repair, link is on S forum I'll paste it here later when I'm not on a poxy phone.
