Quick question.

After stripping the mini I'm going to get the underside blasted so there's no doubt about the extent of any rust.

When I send it off to get painted, how would you send it?
As a bare shell or a rolling chassis on subframes and suspension?

For interior painting would you just paint over the subframe bolts etc?

And another question....

Blast the whole shell to bare metal, or try to leave sound paint on the top half?

Budget on around £400 to do the whole shell with someone reputable, that knows required pressure and media and won't distort panelwork...

Good question.

I'd be interested in how much extra it would add to the paint costs to paint from bare metal rather than from a whatever sound paint is left.

Edit to add: I know this will sound insane but the cost isn't enormously important. If I go ahead this is going to be my company car so all the work will be done out of company (pre-tax) money. I'm more interested in having something that will last for years.

I would go back to metal. It will last longer and may require a bit more filler but there will be no hiding bad metal odd paint etc. I don't know the cost difference, but as they say if it was mine.

i just asked a similar question and was told for a complete Mini to expect it to cost between £800-£1000, they want the car minus the subframes and delivered on a pallet for ease of working on it. They also expect to have the car for 2 weeks (not sure if that's relevant to you) the brief was to strip the car totally and then it receives a treatment or coating not sure which to stop it immediately oxidising.
The company were recommended to me via my nephew who works at Roger Bray restorations in Devon (Porsche 356 specialists) so they must be good.

I've been quoted a similar figure from ABS Blasting here in Bedfordshire who have a good reputation.

Agree with ABS Blasting
Alex is a top bloke and being a car guy he understands exactly what we are all about
He did my mini 6 - 7 years ago

Remember reading your build thread a while ago.
Can you remember how much extra time and cash it was to spray from bare rather than from (what was left of) an original coat?

With a good painter who wants a proper finish on the job they would rather know what was underneith and what they were dealing with.
As they will always want to Prep, undercoat and finish their own work so in my mind no different.

Prep from bare, etch prime and paint - just paid 2K. Finish is fantastic.

Its been on the road now for 5 years and all still good.
Big thing to remember build it right the first time and you dont have to mess around with it ever again.
