I want to insure a Mini 25 for me to drive. There appears to be a problem because the car is registered in my son's name. Does anyone know of an insurance company who will insure just me (no other drivers) for this car?

Background: My son (19yo) has bought another car so that the Mini can come "off the road" for some TLC. He can only afford to insure the other car. The Mini is due to visit a bodyshop in the very near future and it will be simpler for me to drive it there and back before the car is SORN'd (and insured appropriately)

And if you put him on as a 2nd driver?

Two options. Transfer ownership to yourself for the time being, or get it transported to and from the body shop (probably cheaper than insuring it!)

Two things one have you tried Adrin Flex (Advert at to of this forum). They deal with lots of different insurance company's and specialist in do odd ball things. Two take to the company you have insurance with at the moment on your car they may be able to do short term cover on your sons car.

No company I tried, including Adrian Flux, would accept the car being insured with me as the main driver (30+ years driving, clean license) with my son as a second driver while my son continued to be the owner AND registered keeper of the car.

Our current insurers (a multi-car policy) would insure me as the driver but for OVER £200!!

We have resorted to transferring ownership to me and insuring just me (with Adrian Flux!!) for £73!!!

What I call a right royal PITA!!

They couldn't (or wouldn't) do it for me. That is all.

You have to be specific that you are happy for any total loss payment to go to the owner, and that you're happy to pay a premium that reflects a special clause, they will be able to speak to the underwriters who at Flux, can produce an added clause to the policy and an attachment to the certificate. I have one from when I did it. No insurance company likes people doing it in case they pay the wrong person, but several do it, as my wife has had to arrange insurance on my cars in the past, and I can't, or won't add her to my policy, so I write a consent letter for the use, and she's covered it. It's a chore, but Flux did it for me during my divorce when I had the car transferred 'sold' to another, with a letter of consent in my possession, they had a copy if I recall, and all was good.

Just imagine if the car is on finance with an owner (hypothetical), and you take out the policy under which a total loss occurs, and your insurance paid you. The owner is liable for the finance and is unprotected, hence the documents and clauses required

I appreciate that you feel that Flux can do this. I am not disputing this. However, having asked to do something, the "script-reading-sales-kiddie" at the other end of the phone either did not have the wherewithal or didn't have the authority to make any suggestion of the solution you have described.

As the customer, I should not have to think of what possible solutions there could be to the problem. If, as you say, Flux can do this, then all their phone operatives should be in a position to be offer it. I was simple told "No, it can't be done - no insurer offers this".

I rest my case (for a second time)

It's always a hassle dealing with minions

My wife says Swinton were another company that insured her on my Audi, so worth a try there perhaps?

Put V5 in your name. Get son to sell you the mini for a nominal fee, £2, and then later sell it back to him. Only works if you can be trusted not to flog it and spend the money.

I think we used AVIVA on line when we were in a similar position a couple of years ago when my son was selling his mini. They were the only company I found on line to do this. He had a new car and had insured that, but obviously we wanted to keep the mini on the road while we sold it. I insured it with me as the only driver although the mini was registered to him. Once the car was old I cancelled the policy.
