I am fitting Aplus 1275 engine into mk1 bodyshell. There were not a lot of parts with the engine. The engine is in but I am having difficulty aligning the fan belt between water pump and crank. Were there any different sized water pumps or pulleys ever used for the 1275 engine or is it possible I could have picked up a wrong part that could cause this. Any comment welcome thanks

A-plus 1275cc units ran with a big diameter water pump pulley. There is a modern repro part avaliable (at a price) if you can't source a steel pulley

Not aware of any differences in crank damper v-belt position between A/A+. Have you got a 1275 damper on the end of the crank? It has a damper ring (big solid part) outboard of the the V-belt pulley.

have you accidently fitted the metal spacer between the pump and the spacer rather than between the pulley and the fan?

there is no difference in crank/fan position on any mini engine, so it they are misaligned you must have done something wrong....

As above,an A+ will most likely have the breather on the timing cover so you'll need that spacer to distance the fan from it.

that isn't technically true

if its a metro engine with the round breather, you will need loads of spacers (or the big alloy one) to make the fan clear the breather - but then the fan will be so far into the rad that it will be impossible to get the split rad cowl (or very difficult with the single piece cowl)in with the radiator cowl that's welded on the inner wing. you can cut and weld the breather, but its so easy to source the mini flat breather that I would just use on of those.

if its a mini derived engine with the flat breather it will have the smaller spacer fitted, but these where also fitted to many of the none breather engines as it also moves the fan nearer to the rad so it sits in the right place in the cowl.

on the larger two piece crank pulleys you also have to jiggle spacers around to make sure that the fan doesn't touch the pulley with the tips of its blades.

with mk1's you need to use the minimum amount of spacers as you will really come a cropper getting everything in, its hard enough as it is!

Thankyou my friends, mystery solved. The Pulley to fan spacer was between the two, which I could see and was happy with. When in frustration I took the lot apart , some clown had put another spacer between water pump and pulley. You just never know...
