Evening all, I have a 14 plate mini cooper 1.5 petrol (latest model).

For about 3 months now it will stall when cold starting and left at idle. Any ideas what might be causing it? It's going in for its first service next month but wondered if it was something simple/common?

Hello, mine has developed something similar, although it hasn't progressed to stalling. It will run a bit lumpy sometimes when cold. Its also a '14 & due its first service next month.

had it serviced and flagged the issue to BMW, they couldnt replicate the fault despite having it an extra day... then it did it as i started it up and went out the showroom confused

Decided not to worry because it is a lease and goes back soon, but it is persistently starting lumpy now. Will idle at 2k revs, then 1.5... then 1.... then stall before automatically starting again. Only ever happens when cold starting and once going it's fine. bizarre

That sort of running is often down to an engine temperature sensor not sending the correct signal to the ecu, eg thinking the engine is warmer than it actually is and reducing the fuel supply, resulting in stalling or lumpy running until warmed up.

Must keep an eye on my 2014, 1.5, and see if it develops the same symptoms!

I had mine serviced 2 weeks ago and told them about the issue. As I was using the 90 min service they couldn't replicate a cold start so I'll have to book it in over night when I get an opportunity.

If you do get it checked, let us know if anything not right was discovered, please, Neil.

Today in fact my 2014 1.5 Cooper stalled pulling away from two junctions, which could have been dangerous.
It hasn't done that before, so I was caught by surprise.

The engine wasn't fully warmed up, but still it shouldn't happen as I am well used to driving the car (16,000 miles).

My Scangauge does not show any OBD fault codes which it would do if there was a major sensor malfunction.
If it happens again I will contact my dealer too.

Sorry it's been so long in replying, at the service back in July there was a "quality enhancement" which consisted of replacing the high pressure fuel pump cover. Although I was assured this was minor, I think there was a suggestion it was cosmetic! But, I haven't noticed any more idle issues since then, but it's likely this is down to the service, so there is probable benefit in more frequent oil changes to keep things, literally ticking over nicely.
