Im looking at possibly purchasing a 59 plate Cooper D. Its got a full service history and 52k on the clock. Whats the general reliability like with the 1.6 PSA engine in these? I've heard there could be problems with oil sludging and turbo failure on these engines? Is this a common problem? Anything else to note about these engines?

Thanks.

Hi Chrismawa

I was doing the same research as you a few months back, and have had my mini for about 3 months now,

I was looking at the 1.6 PSA engine, and in short.. from reading threads and forums i decided to find a 2.0 diesel that has the BMW motor.. It seems better in every way. It is extremely economical and torquy..i have had the same engine in 3 other BMW (in slightly different tune admitidly) and can really vouch for its reliability. being the 2.0 cruising speeds are really smooth too. I recently did a 200 mile round trip on the motorway, and it cruised like a dream, at 80mph, low revs and just pulled on nicely, and very relaxing.

So far I do not look back at all at my purchase, and am mega happy with the car. its really sporty, fast and still economical. It is more expensive to find a 2.0 model, but i am hoping this was money well spent in the long run. road tax is only £30 thats a bonus too smile

I hope this helps.

Both engines mentioned have major flaws.

I forgot about this thread! Thanks for the response, your SD looks very nice!

I ended up buying a Focus Zetec S 1.6 TDCI - It has the later DV6-C engine I believe which has revisions over the original flawed engine.
