Hi All,

She who must be obeyed has a JCW Convertible on test for the day.
Currently, she has an MX-5 with a folding hard-top, and has been considering a Z4 as a more 'grown-up' alternative.

The MINI is a hoot, so she's seriously considering it now.
At present, the MX-5 lives on the drive, and my concern is how a 'soft' top car will survive outside in all weathers?

Can anybody reassure me, or otherwise?

Cheers,
Linkin

There's product's to help clean & protect it against the elements if you do these regular then it shouldn't be too much trouble

Be reassured - our 2012 Cooper SD Convertible has lived outside all year round from new, with never a hint of a leak.
A once a year spring clean & waterproof treatment (kit available from the main dealer) is all that's required.
Depending on how much it will get driven top-down, keep an eye out for any early signs of wear where the roof folds on top of itself when down. More on my experiences here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Don't let that put you off though - MINI convertibles are so much fun to drive.
We used to have folding hardtop SLK's, but now have softtops living outside all year round, and we don't miss the folding hardtops at all. HTH

My 66 Plate JCW Convertible lives outside... Space under cover is at a premium as I can't seem to resist adding more classics to the fleet biggrin

It's fine... Doesn't get damp, doesn't leak... Roof needs a good clean every so often but other than that all okay.

Do you know what kind of spec you'll be going for.... Happy to offer some input - this is my 4th MINI.

Make sure you spec Heated Seats and the Wind Deflector - fold it down while driving along to feel how much it helps reduce the wind swirling around.
The Convertible Pack includes both these plus Comfort Access which is nice, and also throws in the Always Open Timer which measures the total time you've driven with the roof down...

Agree on the above...

Mine has the Chilli, Media and Tech Packs, plus Heated Front Screen, Wind Deflector, Union Jack top, Heated seats, plus the always open timer.

If you don't have comfort access, you can't fold the roof down off the key, it will only go to the half way stage, which is annoying.

Also, if you don't spec front parking sensors (rears are standard), when you reverse up to a wall till you get the flat-tone, that tone will stay on until you turn the engine off, there is no way of silencing it. This is annoying if for instance you are parking and waiting for someone and want to leave the engine running. If you spec front sensors, there is a toggle switch which will silence the tones.

Just niggling things that you wish you'd known before hand that the salesman won't tell you wink

AS an MX5 fan I would get a MK4 or keep the MX5 !....the convertible Mini looks like a pram!

hard hat on smile

Will the boss be bothered about using the car with the roof down....I rarely see Mini's with the top off....is it difficult to get down?

Ha ha ha !
I've a feeling Miglia may have an input to that Watchnut....

No hard hat required from me - The MX-5 is and has been a brilliant car, and now sits in the classifieds, rather uncomfortably because it is so good, however we have had various incarnations of MX-5 for the last 12 years and it's time for a change.....

Cheers folks... This is my first red one, after having a blue cabrio, a blue hatch and a black cabrio.

Red really suits the F57 shape, and the UJ roof, while a bit frivolous at £490, does look the mutts whatsits.
