I'm thinking of buying one of these next week from an independent dealer. Are there any particular issues I need to be aware of or look out for? All advice greatly appreciated! smile It's 2 owners with about 30k miles.

We bought our 2010 Cooper S auto (N18 LCI) from Boston MINI 3 1/2 years ago at 3 years old with 28k. It's now on 60k.

Only issues have been a failed High Pressure Fuel Pump - a known weak point, cost £300 for a replacement fitted, a parking sensor - fixed myself with a new one and a rocker cover gasket that was fixed under the Used Car Warranty at a service.

The auto isn't the best, but not the worst. We have an auto due to my wife's medical condition, but to be honest it's been excellent and I'd probably pick it over the manual now, we've not had one issue with it. It uses next to no oil and has a long term average of 40, with mid to high 40s the normal on a steady motorway run.

Check the alloys aren't starting to corrode around the valve caps, we had two replaced by MINI.

As you're buying an N18, you should avoid the timing chain tensioner issues.

We have just sold a low mileage Cooper S Auto R56. The down shifts can be a bit harsh, so takes yours for a good run. Get it to temperature and see how it downshifts. Also the window regulators can squeak badly and is a warranty job. I've had ours changed on the last two R56's

Thank you both. That's helpful.

I might just get a sub-60k miles example and stick a Mondial warranty on it. smile

Since the AUC MINI Warranty expired in November 2014, I've been paying for the Driveline + Recovery Mondial for peace of mind (covering engine and gearbox) for around £36 per month. Now the car has clicked over 60k I'd imagine this would be nearer £65 a month if I were to take out the policy now.

When we bought ours it was the cheapest by a mile on the MINI Used Approved. The salesman said it was just about to go out for auction as they'd had it for the maximum time. It may be worth keeping an eye on some at MINI dealers to see if any pop up?

Not sure if you're set on an automatic but there's a fantastic green and red one on eBay - not mine!

UPDATE!! Well we took the plunge and bought a Mini Roadster Cooper S (auto) for the wife. smile 2014 car with 13k miles on the clock and still 3 months of Manufacturers warranty remaining.

Silver/white, black stripes and black roof. It's a hoot to drive but I prefer the comfort (and quiet!) of my BMW 335i. smile

Now I can't take it to my usual local hand car wash place due to the bloody soft top!! frown

Congrats! Agree with you about the NVH on the Roadster. I had a headache after a 20 min test drive (and couldn't get the roof closed, which definitely put the kybosh on buying one). It was a lot of fun to drive, even as an auto, but Mr Sensible took over and I bought a hatch (the Baker Street) that I've kept and still haven't found a better replacement. I'm unconvinced by the F56/57 shape. The 124 was a possibility, but Fiat have decided the auto will only be available in the top specification; this, at £27K, puts it into 218i cabrio territory (admittedly naked). Still, I have hot and cold running water, so shouldn't complain.

Congratulations.
Not sure why you wouldn't get it washed at your usual hand car wash - I simply ask them not to touch the convertible roof of mine, and they're always happy to oblige.

True! I'll try and convince the wife - she's a bit 'precious' about others washing her 'pride and joy'. smile I washed it myself last weekend and got a backache - so stuff that in the future!

Any other Mini Coupe/ Roadster (Cooper S) owners on here? If so, have you had any issues with reliability?

Has the car since May and it's been faultless (16k miles on the clock at the mo), so am thinking about cancelling the monthly Mondial warranty but just wanted to check there aren't any potentially expensive problems around the corner! smile

I commented earlier on the thread..... No issues since.

I've decided to self insure as the Mondial was costing about £450 p.a. (or £36 pm). I've taken out Start Recovery for peanuts.

I have a 2012 Roadster Cooper S, bought just over 18 months ago with 11k on clock, now on 32k and its had:

a new roof- check above where the drivers head would be as when the roof is down it rubs on the rubber strip on the front of the boot causing a hole, common issue and fixed FOC.

a new osf brake caliper as it was sticking

and thats it! Pretty bullet proof cars, just change the oil every 6k as 18k I think is far too long
