Sorry, but I just don't get it. Why lower a 4x4 but have a roof rack as (presumably) a permament feature? Or have AT tyres on? If it means the difference between getting in a car park or not, then OK. But if an alteration in ride height means the difference between making it round a corner, or not, surely you're just in the wrong vehicle. Don't get me wrong, that's a lovely vehicle, but I just don't get the point of a Slammed Rover.

Sadly the answer likely is, that It is bought purely and 100% as a fashion accessory. And that sort of person worries far more about their image and what other like minded (maybe shallow) people will think of their vehicle. Rather than actually buying what would really be the right tool for the job at hand.

it's just like any car modification. Normally pointless but keeps the owner happy.

People have supercars that are never driven, sports cars that are for show and never driven hard and 4x4's that will not go off road.

A lowered 4x4 is the same as a Porsche GT3 that does not go on track

Not really. If some one lifted a GT3 and put it on gravel rally tyres and then took it to track days. That would be similar to having a lowered Defender on AT's, low profile tyres and all blinged up, to only be driven around a city.

It's the contradiction and compromise that I don't get. I'll admit, my 110 has very off-road focused tyres and a snorkel, but rarely ventures off tarmac. But it could, and sometimes does, and certainly isn't really compromised in terms of it's original design brief. Conversely, it has leather seats and perhaps isn't as "hose it out" as it once was, but to be honest if the water has got to the point that the seats are getting wet I've probably ended up somewhere I hadn't intended on going!

What I don't get is lowered suspension on a Defender. Surely buy something like a Disco or Rangey with air suspension and a choice of driving modes, leave the 110 as is, or go all out, and fit full road tyres, and lose the roof rack etc.

As I said, not having a pop at the previous poster, I get the impression he bought it like that and it is a lovely thing (apart from the springs!). I think the GT3 analogy of "not tracking it" isn't right, as you always could if you wanted to. A closer analogy would be fitting a hundred kilos of amps and subwoofers to your GT3, and buying tyres based on how long they last noise/fuel economy. Just defeats the point of a GT3 and there's other Porsche cars available better suited to the purpose.

Well in most Land Rovers/Defenders that would simply be the 'outside'. wink Door seal design and latch design mean, even brand new ones could get wet seats just by running a hose over the outside of the vehicle when washing it biggrin

8 spoke front wheel, Disco back wheel! I get wound up by the fact that the LR centre cap on my Boost spare on the back door isn't perfectly level!!!!!

Plain steel LR series wheels are pretty rubbish though. Only 5.5j wide, so technically illegal to run a 235/85R16 on. Latter ones are little better, but are 6j.

The issue is the offset is no good if you want steering lock. Not unless you fit wheel spacers.

Series 2b rims would be ok, but like hens teeth and way over priced.

I have some genuine 1 Ton rims, same as 130 rims, but are tubed only. Offset is slightly better than regular LR rims, so fine for the back axle, but still no good for a trials vehicle on the front axle.


Of course, you can "cut & shut" rims to alter the offset. But strictly speaking they aren't legal for use on the road as they aren't Type Approved.

Disco rims are cheap and plentiful, are 7j which suits many off road tyre widths and have a good offset for the rear axle and keep the rims tucked in.

The fronts, don't know the make. But they have a much deeper offset and are still only a 7j rim. Pretty hard to find these days as anything with a deep offset tends to be an 8 or 10j rim. Again not ideal for a trials vehicle.


So while I understand your point, it is 100% deliberate.


Although I have more than one set of tyres at my disposal.


Aggressive trials tyres. Again utilising Disco 5 spoke rims at the rear for the same reason. No need to have the tyres sticking out for no reason, plus more risk of damaging the bodywork if they do. And MSA regs prohibit tyres sticking out of the bodywork for off road competition use.






Some narrow 'proper' 7.50 x 16's on narrow 8 spoke rims. But really need to run 1" wheel spacers at the front to get the lock and to stop the tyres fouling the front shocks.









And the tyres pictures earlier, which are 8.25 x 16 XZL's.

Although I've just spent the past weekend painting the Land Rover. So will probably paint the rims to match the roof, but yes they'll still be non matching rims front to rear biggrin
