I'm probably going to have a stab at fitting it in 3 weeks when I finish my myriad of other jobs and get back from a racing trip to Hungary. Having to remove the entire centre console and saw a big hole in the trans tunnel scares me slightly, but I'm sure it'll be fiiiiiine....

I bet I can find somewhere suitable to test it shortly afterwards evil

Doesn't it just bolt in place of the old one?

The hole in the transmission tunnel sheet metal is only designed for a lever to move forwards and backwards, due to the blanket deletion of the difflock by Land Rover. To accommodate the side to side movement of the difflock mechanism, it has to be tripled in width and opened out.

Hmmm, I've vaguely looked into sorting it for mine and never seen any mention of chopping the tunnel about. Have you had to replace the transfer box?

Mine, being pre-2001, has a t-box with the internals still in it (before LR used up their stock of D1 LT30 boxes and made a new D2-specific batch with the locking bits deleted).
You can tell if yours has the locking box by getting underneath and feeling up the side of the casing from the drivers side. Of there is a spigot sticking out the top of the casing, it's fine. If it is just a smooth casting, then you'll need to swap the 'box.

As for fitting, here is a guide from Nick, aka. "Urban Panzer" - the god of D2 mods and fixes:

http://www.discovery2.co.uk/diff_lock.html

As you can see, it's actually a pretty big job!

/smugmode.

Good luck with the fitting. We still need to arrange a green-laming trip.

Mine's a facelift model, so I think I've been reading instructions for when it was re-introduced as an option.

After starting like this 2 days ago

I know have something resembling a land rover!

If only I didn't have pesky things like work in the way and if I wasn't moving in 3 weeks so need it in a state at least to trailer it by then!

Did you see any improvements? (Apologies if you've already posted about it on Disco3, just had a quick look and couldn't find anything...)

I presume that's more down to Tyres rather than the car, you could always fit a snorkel that might help it up next time......

Red also has a transit van. With the worst interior possible this side of ramming your head up a cows arse.

He did however, email me to congratulate me on my superbly appointed interior, the efficient engine and the lovely roof rack.
