Range Rover Classic as a Daily Drive?
Discussion
I go through bouts of using my 1982 classic daily. It's actually a very comfortable, relaxing way to cut about as long as its not so hot that you'd want aircon (these have got a bloody great glass area, don't forget) but the combination of 8-15 mpg and a small by modern standards fuel tank makes for a demoralising experience - it just feels as if you're constantly sticking another £70 of petrol in it
I wouldn't ever call my one (1989 V8 petrol) either reliable or economical - but it is lovely way to travel, when it is working.
My beef at the moment are the electrics - everything from lights to air-con and wipers to seats is shot. It's not the fuses ....
I have a good mechanic who has kept it on the road for years - but he won't touch electrics.
Anyone know of a good auto-electrics place in London or South East?

Although not 'daily' (I live in central London) I use mine (94 softdash) for almost everything, trips to Europe, sporting events in the UK etc... Everywhere you go in it you tend to get someone come and ask you questions or say that they used to have one.
For servicing I have used Sayers MR near Heathrow who have been exceptional. They have their own two-door and there are always a few RRCs in for services when you go. When I bought it some of the electrics were 'interesting' and had clearly been bodged by a previous owner. It took Sayers time and effort to put them back to original but we have eventually got there.
As mentioned try not to look at the petrol gauge, especially when tanking along at 90 in Europe.
Perfect car for the city as well, when you park it next to a new RR you realise just how small the RRC is and with excellent visibility it is very easy to place on the road.
A family member just gave me a Discovery TDV6, it is a more comfortable place to be but just doesn't feel anywhere near as special.
In brief, they are one of the most enjoyable vehicles I have owned.

Env, Eversleigh: I have a question: I use my 96 soft dash every day...as an old truck it has the built of well an old English truck.
On super smooth, it's as good as anything, but when I hit potholes, speedbumps, etc. the center dash tends to squeak: hard plastic I suppose.
Even my old R107 SL300, old 964/993 Porsches don't squeak as much. Actually they are squeak free, but were also designed in the 70's
Do you experience the same?
Wondering what can be done to eliminate those.

I use my 92 everyday and love it, the 4.8 makes a great noise and makes me smile, sure the fuel bill is a little"special' recently had all the bushs, joints, shocks, etc infact all 'consumables' replace and it now drives beautifully, nice v8 burble, whats not to likeOn super smooth, it's as good as anything, but when I hit potholes, speedbumps, etc. the center dash tends to squeak: hard plastic I suppose.

911Thrasher... I have owned a fair few Land Rover products from Defenders to modern Discoveries and to a certain extent they all have squeaks (sure some people will now say I am imagining it and they never squeak etc..)
Anyway, touch of silicone spray might work.
I had a really bad noise coming from my headlining, annoying to the extent I got Sayers MR to take the roof lining apart. They eventually managed to find two pieces rubbing and re-mounted them. It was not a cheap way of getting rid of the noise but it was really getting to me.

MarkH: don't get me wrong, my #2/25 25th anniversary is a daily here in Central London, and we clock at least 10kmiles per year in it since we bought it and restored it.
Just trying to see if someone is also experiencing the hard plastic squeaks from the central dash ...and a solution.
Note: my ex 08 FFRR supercharged was really well put together, and there was no strange noises at all. Modern, another era I suppose.

Squeak seems anomalous. I've never had that in any of mine or noticed in others. My first though was whether someone had not refitted the dash properly? On super smooth, it's as good as anything, but when I hit potholes, speedbumps, etc. the center dash tends to squeak: hard plastic I suppose.

Slight hijack, I'll see whether there are better threads to cross-post on, but can anybody (DonkeyApple?) point us at a general checklist for Classic purchasing? I know there are a fair number of weak spots, but a list would be really useful?
There is some good pointers on this thread. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
