I'm just about to change to a 53 or 54 plate discovery 2 v8 auto, and am planning on looking at two in the next couple of days. Beyond the normal stuff, is there anything I should be looking for? I've had a classic RR before, so am familiar with the majority of the running gear etc, but a checklist or similar to make sure I'm not missing anything specific would be amazing.

Thanks.

They seem to rust on the upswept area of the rear of the chassis which can be quite expensive if not caught early enough.

If it has ACE the pipes rot out and IIRC the fluid isn't available.

The rear airbags leak which then takes out the compressor

As above, the sunroofs leak and soak the headlining and beyond, can be fixed but requires removing the headlining. Sunroof motors wear out.

Lots will have been put on springs at the rear as a cheap solution to fixing the air suspension. Mine has springs, which doesn't cause me any issues but I don't tow anything heavy. I know pulling a horsebox will put the car on its arse without the air. If its on springs, check that the power to the pump / control unit (box under the nearside, middle of the car) is also disconnected otherwise it will drain the battery.

Cruise control can be retro-fitted in around 10 minutes for £80 if it doesn't have it.

Later ones usually don't have diff-lock, just the high/low transfer box, relying on the traction control for keeping moving. The bulk of the mechanicals are still there and can be reconnected.

They like the correct oil, 5w30 fully synth.

Great resource here: www.discovery2.co.uk - lots of maintenance / repairs etc incl the cruise and difflock as above.
