The guy who looks after my cars knows I've been looking for an elderly Range Rover for a while now and he called me yesterday to say he has a 2004 Vogue 4.4 V8 in Black with cream leather. Exactly what I wanted. The downside is that its done 150k miles.

They have looked after this car for years and there is a file full of invoices and bills including a new gearbox, suspension overhaul, engine work etc etc. Seems very straight but I'm worried about how much life there'll be left in the engine. Am I mad? It's cheap and straight enough and drives well, plus I spend a lot of money with the vendor on my existing cars so trusting he wont sell me a dog. Any advice??

150k on a V8 so long as it's been looked after is nothing. Infact it's probably just run in.

I would be more concerned about any parts that havn't been changed like suspension etc but it sounds like most things have been changed.

I wouldn't let mileage put me off....

It needs to be fairly cheap as any subsequent buyers will be asking all the same questions you are.
It may turn out to be a great car and not cause you any real bother but the mileage will always be there.

My P38 diesel is on 156k and it runs fine.....most of the electrical items are shot as is the air suspension and a fair amount of lacquer has peeled off.....but the BMW engine still runs a treat!

I have run V8's for many years and it is absolutely crucial that these engines are serviced religiously or you will get big bills around this mileage. My advice would be it will not be a cheap vehicle to run and I don't just mean fuel. So it would need to be very cheap.

Mine is a black paint / parchment leather Vogue which has done approx 125k and runs lovely.
The gearbox and air springs are the weak points on these, not the engines providing it has been well serviced.

Very easy to work on, but needs a laptop to reset & re-program stuff.

How cheap is cheap?

BTW don't expect to get much more than 16mpg or 18mpg on a run! clap

Many thanks for the responses.

I've just taken the plunge and bought it. Went and drove it on Friday night and it really is a very straight old thing. Bodywork clean and tidy and everything electrical actually works. Suspension goes up and down as it should, seats move in every direction and get nice and warm, air con nice and cold, parking sensors all work etc etc. A couple of small rust bubbles on the tailgate and a hideous rubber nudge bar on the front being my only major criticisms. TV doesn't work but its since occurred to me that this may be because they've turned the analogue signal off?? Black with cream leather seats piped blue, all in great nick.

Just had a fresh MOT done and a full service history (main dealer to over 100k). The Seller has serviced it for me as he looks after my other cars. Within the last six months its had new box, new radiator and associated sensors, new air compressor for the suspension, the list goes on.

I'm paying £4500 and having the nudge bar removed immediately. I know this will most likely mean I need a new front bumper but no way can I live with that on the front.

I must be mad but I've rationalised it myself that its not going to have a very hard life and will do minimal mileage. A third car that will be used for getting out and about in bad weather (very rural where I live) and chucking logs, shopping and dogs in the boot.

Wish me luck!

Good luck! I bought a 2002 V8 L322 a couple of years back. It needed a pair of front suspension airbags and something diff related I can't recall but for the cost of the car and the fact it had no service history I can't complain.

You will be fine with this.... 2004 was, as advised by RCV in Kent ,one of the best years to buy the L322...
Do watch out for water ingress into the stereo/navigation box of tricks in the boot, (left hand side) ...try wrapping it in plastic etc... Also expect the air compressor (air suspension) to go too...at some point...
Best of luck with it.

Knocking on the door of 228K now...when she gets to 230k I plan to treat the great old girl to an alloy wheel refurb...at which point I would challenge anyone to guess the milage to within 100k smile

Yes, almost certainly. I replaced mine with a digital tuner when the analogue went off - not that I use it very often, but when the time comes to sell, I wanted everything to work.

As I recall it was a very simple job. Can't remember how much, but yours will be common with all TV-equipped BMWs of the same era so there should be plenty of choice/competition price-wise if you decide to change it.

Bargain purchase btw!

if your going to replace the bumper with 'original' contact some of the people who do facelifts as they will have spare bumpers very reasonably priced

or

you could have a facelift?

when I changed the tuner on my 2005 car for a hybrid digital one it was a Jaguar/Land Rover version circa 2007
