Landrover Freelander TD4 2.0 2004
Discussion
Had 2, had good and bad experiences with them.
TD4 is a BMW engine. It's pretty reliable and gives mid 30s for mpg, can give higher on motorways at 60. Best i got was 44.5 and 598 miles from one tank of almost constant motorway driving.
Change the EGR to a blanking kit, change the hoses to silicone ones as the originals split with age, that's common with diesels as they age and isn't a LR thing.
MAKE sure the crank case filter gets changed EVERY service. It usually gets missed.
Drop links can go with age, vcu can wear out with age. Can be replaced for £400 so a worthy change.
Rear diff mounts can go with age, 3 of them. Prop support bearings as well. Get GKN ones, they are the best for quality.
Tailgate seal can leak, lift the lockable boot floor where the jack etc live and if the carpet is damp, you need a new seal. Also the window regulators can fail, stretched cables etc. Easyish to sort out if it happens.
Best tyres go on the rear to keep the VCU happy.
Spec's go from E,S,SE,HSE. There are Sport and Sport Premium but they can be missing spec that the SE,HSE has. IE, leather seats, heated windscreen, rear parking sensors etc.
I had 2 SE TD4's. I would go for a SE/HSE AUTO, the auto is better for the car. Manual is nice but if you do get slave/master cylinder issues, replace with genuine parts!! Trust me. I had master failure on mine, britpart one lasted 6 months, when it failed it took out the slave, the replacement was fitted under warranty and lasted 18 months. I fitted a genuine part and it was fine since.
Good cars, i really liked mine. It was comfy, well equipped and was good in snow and muddy conditions. You need to keep the throttle on a bit to get the TC to work but it's very good.
Loads to choose from so check them out, read a few online guides and buy a TD4 auto SE/HSE.
