Just picked up a Disco 2 4.0v8 for winter duties / fun.

Tyres are good all round and are 255/55/R18 , but they are a mix:

Front: Goodyear Efficient Grip

Rear: Goodyear Wrangler HP

From what I can find the Wrangler HP is an all-season tyre, but no longer available in this size. The Efficient Grip is not all-season.

Couple of questions:

1. Given I live in the South West should I worry about changing the tyres at all for the winter?

2. Switching all four to either Grabber AT2 or Toyo Cross Country AT, which seem to be two of the few available in the size.?

3. Get a set of R16 with something more off-road orientated for the winter?

I believe the Toyos are all-season and reasonable off road too.

Any thoughts?

If your thinking of going offroading then buy a set of 16s.

As tight fart said, 16" wheels for off road giving you more choice in tyres then keep the 18" for your summer stuff.

Just love talking rubber. wink

Hi Sarge,

What rubber would you recommend for general winter / (very) light off road use?

I guess for me, performance on wet / icy / snow roads is more important than mud ability.

In the past I've had 4x4s all running Grabber AT and TBH were fine on snow / ice etc.

This was years ago and there so much choice/information around now that I've just got totally confused.

General AT2 are a great choice depending on tyre size as they do most things quite well, my choice on my Defender 110 and my 90.

Always happy to help with tyre choice, learnt quite a bit in almost 40 years in the game. wink

You may find a winter tyre will do what you need but I need a bit more info on vehicle and size you are running.

Looks like the AT2s are favourite then.

Any views on the Toyos at all?

General ATs on my Grand Cherokee. Brilliant in all weathers, great in really deep water.
