Range Rovers and Trackers
Discussion
as in another topic I'm about to get an 18 month old L405
rang my insurers for quotes
only one would quote without a tracker - £3500 pa
with the most basic tracker (£180) - £600 and pennies
also I have been told the car I may buy has a Cat 5 tracker (£800)
so, are trackers really that effective?

Appears the insurance company thinks so in a BIG way!
I was in the job when they first came out & was very impressed then.
I presume you have had a look at their website?
http://www.tracker.co.uk/
Don't forget there is a subscription involved.

Does the insurance say to have a tracking device fitted, or a tracking device fitted and any subscription paid for?I was in the job when they first came out & was very impressed then.

apparently thieves do not know the car has a tracker fitted unless you display a badge 'Tracker Fitted' but given this may not be true the tracker does not stop attempted theft!
I imagine the real pro's know how to deal with a tracker?
I have been doing some research on trackers for my new Defender and came across this
http://www.trackerfit.co.uk/brands/trafficmaster/r...
The thing that caught my eye was the anti key cloning technology as that seems to be the issue (accordingly to the newspaper reports) on the L405
I have no idea what they are like but they seem to have good reviews and are Thatcham Cat 6. I've been wondering why they are not Cat 5 though.
ETA - be interesting to hear how your cat 5 tracker works
On the defender that's what I'm thinking about fitting as they seem to have the same issue with theft as RR but are easier to nick

Thieves know exactly how to disarm a Tracker...had my car stolen off Sloane Square...within 5min from Tracker giving me a call to advise the car was moving they lost complete track of it!!!
I guess they are good enough to tell you your car is being stolen just now...but nothing more.
Totally useless!

I have fitted this http://www.mtrackonline.co.uk/ to my car as I intend to change for another new RRS. Thieves generally know where to look for hard wired tracking devices. I liked the MTrack device as 1, being wireless it can be transferred to my next car when I change it and 2, It's much harder to locate.
I've bought the Range Rover - it has a Trackstar Cat 5 tracker fitted - apparently the only one approved by LR
subs are £189/year or £549 for three years
full details on Trackstar web site - seems to cover every eventuality?
I can imagine to start with I might forget to take the Tracker module to the car and thus Trackstar will ring me thinking the car has been stolen
been told obviously under no circumstance put the tracker module on the keyring - lol!

"if you don't pay the subscription the device is not 'turned on'
my L322 has a tracker fitted but is not 'turned on' as there was no reduction in premium?"
turned on i guess you mean in the event of you reporting a theft they enable it ? or is device always on regardless?
'turned on' by the company who monitor/track the vehicle - for this you pay an annual subscriptionmy L322 has a tracker fitted but is not 'turned on' as there was no reduction in premium?"

in the case of my L322 my insurers would not offer any discount for a tracking system so no use paying for it - the system is still installed in the car and can be activated if a new purchaser wants/needs a tracker
my new L405 had to have a tracker fitted otherwise it was virtually uninsurable

Best to look for another insurance company and find one that doesn't insist on you fitting/subscribing. Tracker units are a waste of time, masses of cars go missing that have had trackers fitted, most professional car thieves know exactly where to find and remove the device.
best of luck finding an insurer who does not insist on fitting a trackermy broker is a Range Rover owner and a member of this site - and only one quote of £3500 was found without a tracker and that's in Notts NOT London/SE
the car already had the Trackstar system fitted as its the only one approved by LR - so it was just a case of paying the subscription which reduced the cost of insurance to pennies over £600
