I've got a nice TD5 Discovery 2 with 115k on the clock. There is a rumbling noise coming from the front of the vehicle which sounds like a bearing. However, the rumbling noise disappears when steering left, returns to "noticeable" when driving straight on but becomes noisier on steering right.
Any ideas where I should start to remedy this or what it could be?

Thanks.

Hmm, others may have better knowledge than me, but thinking this through logically:

- diff: I don't think it will be the diff itself. There shouldn't be a lot of lateral movement, I guess outside possibility it could be the bearing on the halfshaft, but unlikely.

- wheel bearing: possible, and easy to check. You do have noise permanently, which changes under different stress conditions, so that's not impossible. Just jack the car up and see how much play you have in the wheel, if there is loads then change the bearing

- swivel/CV joint: if it's not the wheel bearing I'd be having a good hard look at this. Seems to be the component most likely to change state as you put different (turning/cornering) loads on it, although I have to say I'm not sure it would make a noise in steady straight-ahead conditions?

For me, wheel bearing first, CV joint next.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Prepare for it to get a lot worse very suddenly at some point if it's anything like the wheel bearing that went on my ibiza! Went from almost imperceptible to horrendously loud in 40 miles!

Thanks for the replies. Very informative and useful. I'll get it booked in for a new hub.
