Hi, was just wondering if you had any advice on what winch to get for my defender? I've been looking at some superwinch ones, but i'm a little overwhelmed by the choice!

What do you actually intend to do with the winch?

Sorry to piss on your party and to come in cannons blazing but...

Do you need a winch or do you simply want one as a bit of 'bling'??

Winches are expensive, dangerous, require training, maintenance and additional vehicle modifications to let it all work properly. Frankly... If you're asking questions like that, you don't know what you're doing, so how do you know you need a winch?

Is it for self-recovery? If so, maybe some driver training would be best to begin with... That way you will learn the skills that will help you not get stuck in the first place??!!??

In most situations, people think they need a winch for self-recovery. If you're out with another car, the quickest way is to use a good quality rope. However, if you NEED something for self-recovery... The quickest way of getting unstuck is to go out the way you went in, i.e. backwards. You need a winch to be mounted on the rear!!

Personally, unless I knew I REALLY needed a particular winch (line work, competitions, etc...) I'd go for a Tirfor hand winch. It can be hard work but it will work in any situation.

What he said.

I've managed for twenty plus years by careful reconnaissance ON FOOT of tricky looking patches. When a error has been made I've kicked myself then deployed the hi-lift, base plate and shovel. If that won't get you out then you've really screwed up!

I dare say you are correct but I would love a wench.
But then I would also need to get a snorkel!
