no, I like others dislike the rotary system - at least give buyers a choice

best of both worlds?

Answer is buy a Sport if you want a gear lever.

My biggest issue with the rotary selector is that its action feels a bit cheap.

Why not adopt the column shift style that Mercedes use, up for R, down for D and push button on end for P. I find it pretty fool proof and a simple elegent solution for acheiving it. Leaves the centre tunnel area uncluttered too.

Because you're desperate for a Range Rover with a gear lever and that's the only way you're going to get one.

I find the rotary shift not a problem and easy to use. Disconcerting at first but you quickly get used to it. It is not a sports car, for people who would like a more sporty kind of SUV, they can buy the Sport which has a gear lever. And please no American style column shift that dates back from the 50's which Mercedes inherited from the Chrysler group. No thanks.

Experience of Land Rover's design and product planning departments? No.

Experience of a few years' use of a Range Rover with the rotary gear selector? Yes.

I've had the rotary selector 3.5 years and still hate it.

I'm presently deciding whether to buy a new V8 diesel RR or Cayenne V8 diesel.

Now that the current RR has been out for a while I'd be interested in any thoughts or advice from owners. I haven't even test driven one yet but after a bit of research it seems to be a great car. I read something about a keyless entry glitch a few pages back, so that's the sort of thing I'd like to know more about.

Cheers.

Edited to remove so many uses of the word 'currently' !!

Done lots of miles in a cayenne GTS (my father has one) and in December bought a 2011 TDV8. The Porsche handles better, whereas the Range Rover rolls A LOT. Reliability will be better with the Porsche however what the RR lacks in dynamic ability it more than makes up for elsewhere. It is 1000 times more comfortable than the Cayenne. It is more practice and I have to say it, I have barely been using my Bentley since buying the RR. It's that good.

If you buy one though make sure you get one with a warranty, and you will have to accept that it will not be trouble free I'm afraid. Have a go of one. Only you'll know if you like it enough to put up with its flaws smile

I actually like washing my L405, the paint and finish quality is very good. I have the F-Type and the paint finish on that is rubbish in comparison. It sounds silly but the RR's paint just seems thicker!

Anyhow, I'm selling mine. Sick of the constant problems. Been to my local (friendly) dealer 4 times now to have a 'low battery' warning message sorted. Just the fiasco to fix the Low Battery warning light to date:

Visit 1. Service Manager called Mechanic who tested battery and said it was fine (which it is), then told me that cars show 'low battery' all the time. Luckily as he turned it off it flashed up 'low battery' so he conceded there was a problem.

Visit 2. Hard reset of the ECU. Fixed problem for 12 hours.

Visit 3. Apparently there was a wire loose, they re-soldered. Problem returns 12 hours later.

Visit 4. Fitted new battery. Problem returns 12 hours later.

Visit 5...... in two weeks. We shall see as apparently there's a 'service request' open. Whatever that means.

That's aside from my four other visits to have warranty work, recalls and a service done. So a total of eight visits in one year.

It's not over yet though, oh no.

Still pending is a new soft close door mechanism, oh and the rear camera has fallen back into it's housing.
It's also started creaking weirdly, but that I don't mind. Along with the loud thump from the rear suspension when it starts up (intermittently). That's all part of the character.

Don't get me started on the weird way, when I brake, the front left dips a lot more than the right but only sometimes...sigh.

Aside from all that it's great.

Glad you've managed to get a good one. Land Rover products can be quite problematic.

Just took one on at work against better advice. Two days in and problems already. Turn the car on full lock and the wheel is rubbing somewhere. Three warning lights have appeared on the dash. Now back at the dealers. £106,000 for an expensive lounge.
