I'm presently deciding whether to buy a new V8 diesel RR or Cayenne V8 diesel.

Now that the current RR has been out for a while I'd be interested in any thoughts or advice from owners. I haven't even test driven one yet but after a bit of research it seems to be a great car. I read something about a keyless entry glitch a few pages back, so that's the sort of thing I'd like to know more about.

Cheers.

Edited to remove so many uses of the word 'currently' !!

I've just bought an L405 TD V8 after a few years with an L322 4.4 V8 petrol

the new car is in a totally different league not least helped by loosing nearly half a tonne in weight - performance is now as per the 'old' 5.0l supercharged but getting 30+ mpg

handles more like a 'car'- bends I took at 30mph in the L322 can be taken at 50mph with nearly zero body roll

the interior is far less cluttered with regards to dials/switches etc - but I really miss the overhead sunglasses 'pocket' of the L322 - small point but very important to me

touchless entry has been reported to have been a factor in some recent car thefts? - I have a tracker so am not worried, plus I live in the frozen north not London, lol

couple of negative points - the rear of the car gets filthy far more quickly than the old car which means in wet/dirty road conditions you need to clean the rear camera lens several times a day - poor location?

I have the deployable side steps that are a godsend with an arthritic hip - BUT they are mud/dirt traps even after adding mud flaps

some tall people have had quite bad head wounds from the upper tailgate as it parks quite low for tall people and is easily forgotten until you tear your scalp - plus said tailgate has no proximity sensor so if you open it in the garage you will get damage (quite easy to catch the release button getting in/out the car)

so far very limited accessories - ie no mesh type rear roller guard/no side nets in boot etc -maybe range will increase when LR find out what owners want?

still the same stupid jack as used on the L322 - its a joke and should not be used as it can easily fail (from personal experience)

if your near Notts you are welcome to have a look/drive my car

+1. I agree with all remarks above. I used to have a Cayenne S, I'm on my fifth Range Rover and driving a L405 Supercharged Autobiography. I would never go back to a Cayenne. I've driven the latest Turbo version and yes it is a good car but in no way matches a Range Rover for comfort and practicality. While the latest Range Rover's roadholding is a vast improvement on previous models, it is still no Cayenne in the corners.
I would have said if you want a sportscar, buy a proper Porsche but looking at your profile you already have a couple of sports cars so a Range Rover would complement those nicely.
Never had any problems so far with my Range Rover but make sure you buy one with the latest software updates if you're not buying new.

could you please give details of said software?

can older cars be easily updated by dealers?

Does anyone know when the sat nav / infotainment system is going to be updated in the L405? From what I understand, it's pretty similar to what I have in my 08 L322 (happy to be corrected on that point if not).

I also don't like the look of the new rotary gear shift - much prefer the old fashioned stick (and it looks like they've gone back to that in the newer Sport).

sat nav is more advanced than 08 and its graphics are excellent - is it any better?

its no longer cd based so updates have to be done by main dealer

and I'm another who dislikes the rotary gear shift - just cannot get used to/like it!

probably too old as been driving too many years with a 'stick', lol

I tested both before settling for the L405.

Cayenne deisel s nice but it doesnt give you the feel good factor like the RR. It also feels a lot smaller and a class down altho build is second to none. Dealer service is another matter...LR cant close to Porsche in that department.

Try both and it should hopefully click into place.

I'm going to be test driving RR and Cayenne soon. We had a brief ride in a new base spec Cayenne the other day and the ride and ambience were rotten. My 13 year old French jalopy felt like a Phantom afterwards.
I think the RR will win us over but I'm going to gave the Cayenne a good shot and try out a well specced one next time.

Previous incarnations of the RR were plagued with unreliability moans from owners on here. I know it's early days but you guys have had decent reliability so far by the sound of it.
The Cayenne also had a few issues years ago but they seem to be rock solid these days - at least I can't find many gripes from owners.

Well sadly I've had loads of issues with my L405 (vogue SE V8 Diesel).

As I type this I gaze out of my office window at my beloved dealer replacement Freelander, the car I use almost as much as the L405:

To date (in order) I've had Suspension Fault (new compressor), Suspension Fault (some module),

Recall for thermo fan, and now it's at the dealer while they try to work out why the 'Low Battery' warning keeps coming on despite it having a nearly new battery that is 100% okay.

Oh and the 'soft close' doors don't....

That said...

I still love it, the reaction I get from people inside and out, and thus wouldn't consider a Cayenne at all. Strange behavior indeed.

There's a thread on rangerovers.net about the recalls:
http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/24-range-rover-ma...
There are two owner's forums of note: www.fullfatrr.com and www.rangerovers.net
You'll find a lot of info there and owner's experience.
They are generally good with some owners that have been unlucky but that is generally the case with Land Rovers. I used to have one of the worst Range Rovers, a P38 4.6HSE and it was pretty reliable while other owners didn't quite enjoy the same reliability.

Thanks for the links to the owners forums. I can see ignorance was bliss for me in this case.
PH is my only forum really; when you are into TVRs there's no need to look anywhere else.
I've lived a sheltered life hehe

its human nature that people will always say when things are wrong but very rarely/ever say when things are good

so its very easy to think all Range Rovers are inherently faulty?

there were certainly many problems with the early cars especially the P38 with the first air suspension, but under Tata things have massively improved but there are still some aspects that need to be addressed

the L322 suffered from a crossover period between BMW/Ford and then Tata - a hybrid system, though my L322 BMW petrol 4.4 V8 was superb apart from some transitional gremlins

the L405 is superb from a driver perspective but is not totally fault free - having said that a friend of a friend has had most supercars inc a Veyron and they are not exactly fault free either

Agree with Cherokee.

Whilst the card at this end of the market are very nice to drive, they are rarely fault free. It seems the higher up you go, the potentially more problematic issues you face. Have had 2 Bentley GTCs, one 14MY V8 and one 15MY V8S and they have both spent many weeks in the dealership for warranty work which is often difficult to diagnose due to the complexity!

Right, we've got a RR and RRS test drive booked for Tuesday and a Cayenne with a proper suspension for Thursday next week.
I thought we'd give the RRS a go for due diligence. Didn't like previous incarnations of the RRS but this one seems ok. Now has same towing cap as the RR too.

Had a bit of fun reading the forums - seems like RR drivers look down their noses at RRS drivers. hehe

Sports have always had a 3.5 tonne towing capacity (but buy the proper one).

You won't like the operation of it either, it's utterly retarded and smacks of a marketing driven decision. I would even go as far as to say it is dangerous.

When going forwards and backwards in a 3-point turn it's easy to slip past the selection you want and find yourself immobile and rocking to and fro because you've selected park.

Mine will sometimes go into drive without a foot on the brake.

You have to look at the selector quite a lot.

But the single most retarded thing is when using the car off road you have to use the paddles for command shift. So when the steering wheel is upside down your + and - is reversed. Even LR's own off-road experience blokes admit it's retarded.

The lever is far better and I suspect it will be back on the FFRR at some point when it can be made to appear that it wasn't a gaffe putting it on there in the first place.

Personally don't find it a big issue, although as you say it can be irritating when trying to turn around in a hurry and you stick it into Park.

I've had my car three months and still am not at ease/happy with the bloody rotary gear selector - as you said its a 'design statement'

form over function

bet the 'gear lever' returns soon?

I'd say zero chance of it returning.
