How much wider does it seem in real life?
I looked at the dimensions, and it's hard to believe the width, not inc the mirrors, is 6'9" - that's going to cause some issues with 6'6" width restrictions!
Width wise, it sits on the drive in virtually the same place as the Evoque, just a little longer. The Evoque has a bulging wing design over its wheels that makes it about equivalent to the width of the DS that doesn't have the bulges. I have see a graphic of the DS overlayed on the Evoque but can't find it now. I'll post it if I come across it again.
I quite like the Disco Sport but personally I'm not a massive fan of that colour.
It's interesting where JLR are headed with Land Rover - when I had my Freelander 2 which was 4 years back their cars were pretty "ordinary" looking and the options list was very ordinary.
Go in a Land Rover showroom now and it's more like entering a fine art museum - there's clearly been a massive push towards "customisation" and "lifestyle" and just about everything seems to have lots of trim and black gloss everywhere.
I think some of it looks stunning, but I also think when you see 4 Evoque's ranging from £28K to £55K on show it's a bit sobering when you realise it's basically £27K worth of black gloss plastic and other toys on the more expensive ones.
That said, it seems to be working for JLR and it's nice to see a success story as it keeps a lot of people employed in the UK and the Midlands especially.

I also think I read somewhere the FL2 is wider than a P38?

Thanks - actually, that doesn't really matter as we'll never buy an Evoque.DS's attraction over X3 / Merc GLC is occasional 7 seats, and I can one on a friends and family deal. I'm just concerned my wife would find it a massive hassle to park.

Get one with the "park assist" DS's attraction over X3 / Merc GLC is occasional 7 seats, and I can one on a friends and family deal. I'm just concerned my wife would find it a massive hassle to park.
Very nice, except the wheels for me. Not a fan of gloss black wheels at all.
The engine thing is an interesting example of where the motoring press is so spoiled with excellent vehicles that the only distinctions they can make are heading towards things that the average punter will never notice.

My wife parked her Evoque anywhere and everywhere for the past 3 years without problem and she isn't the most confident when parking. The DS is easier to park because the visibility is far better than the Evoque. DS's attraction over X3 / Merc GLC is occasional 7 seats, and I can one on a friends and family deal. Agreed. All the press are following each other on the DS engine point. None know what's coming and when. Some say the new engine will only be offered in a 2WD version initially, which is of no interest to me and may others. And ultimately it will be another diesel. So just how different/better will it be? I'm sure the average purchaser won't pay much attention, as they didn't when LR swapped to a 9-speed auto box in the Evoque a few years ago. People are still happy to pay good money for the older version. The wife and I looked at one of these at the weekend, and while nice disappointed in the fact that the boot just isn't big enough. The wife would like a smaller car to our current Discovery, previously we had a Freelander 2 which to be fair was probably just right for her.
And before anyone gets the class leading boot volume in litres, it has a weird headlining hump that severely restricts the ceiling height. Not sure why it's there as the rest of the cabin headlining is markedly higher. This means our dogs will not fit comfortably.
The Freelander 2 had a better boot, and the Discovery is worlds away.
So at the moment there is no alternative from LR to our Discovery, unless we go back to a Freelander.
It seems that some practicality has been dropped, extra seats aside, in the current range of cars.
I'd be interested to see how they re-invent the Discovery. Will they keep it as the ultimate do it all family wagon or will they curve it all off with the corporate look and leave former customers to look elsewhere?

I had a look round these while in ordering a few parts for my own D3.
I like the styling, the looks are really good, and i've seen 2 in your own spec so far out of the 4 i've seen.
Only thing i didn't like was the seats, they felt too flat for me and this is going to a proper skinny prick first world issue but they were too wide for me...
I had a good couple of inches of side to side wiggle room in them.
Otherwise, lovely car.
The £59k price for one in the showroom had me wince, then i saw the sold sticker over it..

Which is why I wonder if it really is a FL2 replacement. There are new Land Rover dealerships opened at Erdington and Stafford and if anyone has seen them the size of the showrooms suggests a lot of new models on the way as right now they seem to have 3 of everything on show just to fill the space.

I think it looks great in your brave colour combination.
There will be zillions on the road in two years, but I bet not so many like yours - congratulations!
(As much as I really do like it, I would have gone silver or black - but I am probably a lot older than you!)
Eh? Firenze is an incredibly popular/common colour choice these days, especially on the Evoque. There will be zillions on the road in two years, but I bet not so many like yours - congratulations!

I agree that its not for everyone, but its certainly no "brave" outlier anymore.
