HI all, we have an old rrc 1991 in the family that been pretty good to date but the tappets have started ticking !!!

Is there anything to check before putting it into the garage, its number 7 thats ticking and its done 137,000 miles

Thanks

Are you sure its not a blowing exhaust manifold gasket?
What oil are you using?
At that mileage there will be a fair amount of wear to both the camshaft & the tappets. They must be replaced together and genuine tappets are a must.

Interesting thanks, I believe it may have a blow on the manifold but it also may have a rattly tappet.

I suspect it may need a new camshaft and tappets and whilst your doing that you might as well do the rest, I guess !!

Its nots really surprising it has done the miles

Thanks

Strangely enough, my immediate thought was the same as paintman's... A blowing manifold gasket or a crack in a down pipe, can sound much like a noisy tappet.

Thanks, having looked at now it seems ironically it has a blow from the manifold gasket and a wobbly no.7 tappet.

Manifold easy ish but tappet less so !!

Need some one that actually knows what they are doing to look at it !!

137k isn't massive miles on that engine.

I'd be inclined to sort the gasket first and run it for a bit.

And use a mineral oil. Run mine on 15w40. The engine is old technology & not really suited to thin synthetics.
The exhaust gaskets - esp the separate ones, there are 8 of them with 4 per side - are very easy to fit upside down and wrong way round which doesn't help the sealing. check that the exhaust manifold bolts are tight.

It's a fair mileage on the original camshaft though!

Or you could use the later stainless steel spectacle type, much harder to fit the wrong way around and much easier to install.
