Pondering on this for sometime later this year, with a 100 mile a day commute (mostly motorways, but they can and do grind to a halt at times, so no real opportunity for serious schlepping, although I do like to take advantage of any overtaking opportunities when they present themselves) and weekend dog carrying/tip runs/odd weekend away, would an RRS or Vogue be suitable?

Really only looking at TDV8s, as I could take the 20mpg (at best) of a V8, nor the lack of grunt in the TDV6.

I had a supercharged vogue for 2 years which I put 65k miles on. Cost me a fortune in fuel but if a lorry hadn't sideswiped it I'd still be using it. Best car I ever owned for that sense of comfort and do anything at anytime anywhere. Make sure you get an inspection on it before you purchase it though as they aren't cheap to fix.

Thats a LOT of miles!! and even more ££££s... :gulp:

Is there really a big difference in handling between the two?

I got an IIDTool, which amongst many things allowed me to lower my Vogue by 25mm so it handled like a Sport. They both weigh the same but the vogue has a better and more spacious interior with far better seats and is more capable off-road. I think I was getting 25mpg on long uninterrupted journeys, 21mpg on a normal motorway run and about 12-16mpg on short journeys around town. The petrols are much smoother and quieter with the trade off being a range of 350-470miles a tank. I offset the cost of a petrol against a 7k saving over a diesel. Also the supercharged spec is slightly higher than the top non-autobiography diesel equivalent.

Oh thats a good shout thanks for the heads-up.

From what I've seen, I'd agree that the Vogue is a better car inside, and if you can drop the ride that much, then it becomes by far the better bet - I wasn't that impressed by the RRS and having to move the drivers seat forward to get the rear load space flat: meant I couldn't get comfy in the front again.

If I'm right, its about a £2k save between similar TDV8s and V8 SCs, and fuel would be £2500 a year more, so its a close thing. TBH, I'm only planning on keeping for a year, to see if I get on with it, then swap for the next to minimize mileage-led depreciation. Decisions, decisions....

This is pretty much what I'm looking at although mileage should be considerably less (circa 17k) My commute is 20 miles, half of which is motorway although I do regular longer motorway journeys.

I'm not a huge fan of diesel so interested in the SC V8 - is it better to go SC 4.2 than the 4.8 that I'm seeing advertised? Looking at 70,000 miles plus on cars for sale at the moment, are the engines lasting well? I'm looking at 2/3 years ownership so could put another 50,000 miles on it.

I don't know of any 4.8 engines in the L322 so sounds a bit shady to me. There was a 4.4 BMW petrol which then got changed for a Jag 4.4 n/a and 4.2 supercharged in 06/07. I bought my 4.2 with 70k on the clock and put 50k on it without an issue. I even upgraded the intake, had the SC pulleys changed and a remap and exhaust which meant it rolling roaded at around 495bhp with the torque being limited by the gearbox software. Even doing all that it was absolutely fine.

One thing I can recommend is getting the gearbox oil "double flushed" if you're buying a reasonably high miler, it made the world of difference in smoothness and power delivery for me.
